High boy restoration
« on: March 12, 2018, 08:08:31 PM »
Starting to fix up my 1977 f250 factory highboy, put a Edelbrock 4 barrel intake on and a Holley 600 carb, cap and rotor, plugs and wires.. Running great now, got some 35x12.50x17 tires. Looking for some input on whether to go with black wheels or chrome.

I had the same truck, and regret selling it everyday.  If you can find some old mags for it, looks great and classic.  If not, I'd still go polished over black rims, just looks good on the old trucks.  Google up some pictures

I had the same red one only a 76 with the 360, 4 speed.  One of my boys has it now but it's seen better days. I hope he does something with it. Bought it brand new right off the truck for $6180.00

If I remember correctly, that 351m turns into a 400 with only a crank swap. So parts ought to be readily available.

check out, https://www.tmeyerinc.com/ - they do some pretty neat stuff with those 400s.  fun fact, the 351M and 400 were the last pushrod V8 engines ford ever designed.

i love old fords myself, would love to restore a '77 short box 4x4...but i'll settle for my '84 f250 at the moment :chuckle:

300 Six is a solid choice. Better engine than the 360/390 mine had.

Keep the stock steel.  Painted silver argent looks great with any body color on those trucks.   :twocents:

Love the old ford highboy's, you guys are making me miss one i had
1972 highboy sport custom i paid 500 bucks for with a blown motor, all stock till i got ahold of it
I put on 4 inches of suspension lift over and above the factory height then added a 3 inch body lift, black painted frame and suspension, gun metal painted front and rear diffs with chrome covers, chrome front and rear bumpers, diamond plate bed caps and homemade diamond plate door sills, custom made dual steering stab set up, rancho 9000's, tinted windows and rolling on Weld wheel super singles sporting 42 inch swampers and painted red. Oh and a mild built 390  :chuckle:
Its was quite the truck, got lots of looks etc, was my daily driver for 4 yrs even commuting to seattle from issaquah for a bit.
Sold it the first day i put a sign in it to a guy that drove by everyday drooling over it.

Miss that truck..

Was going to replace my door seals and found some rust. Pulled back the floor and found that both floors pans are rusted out. Looks like I’ll be cutting out all the cancer and welding in new floor pans. Just ordered the pans from lmc truck, $40 a piece not bad.

The most common 16.5 rimmed 4x4 tire is the 37x12.5R16.5 Goodyear Humvee tire. For a while they were available used on the market very reasonable  for the size.

After you get done cutting and patching all the rust consider a roll in bed/cab liner. I just finished my XJ Cherokee with a Monster liner kit. My 2 gallon kit did my hole inside extra thick. It turned out good as I like a less textured feel compared to Rhino or other really grippy liners.
