Canvak is the best, it's made for preserving canvas and does not have a strong odor, you can get it from Cabelas for $20.00 a gallon.

I've followed the mfg advise and set the tent up and hose it down real good and let it air dry. Supposed to shrink fabric and stiching ?? Anyway, seems to work. But I've gotten into the habit of putting a rain fly over my tent anyway. Keeps pitch and what-not off of tent and looking nice for longer.

If it's an Army Canvas, like ours, we've always set our tents up in the summer when it's warm out and we spray it on (Thomspons Water Seal) - we spray the seams down and leave it up for a few days and then pack the tents away - there's never been a smell.
Our group has two 16x32 tents and a 16 x 16 army canvas tent and we've been hunting together since early 1990's. If you've got any holes that need patched, we just use the same canvas as a patch and regular contact cement. It's all worked very well for us!!
p.s. BEWARE: Once you've got your tent set-up in hunting season - don't ever touch the inside of the tent with your hands - that's what can cause a leak!!!!
