Where are the elk this year???
« on: April 12, 2026, 10:09:42 AM »
Man,
I can’t seem to find any fresh elk sign or elk for that matter. Was wondering if the lack of snow has them in non-normal areas? I’ve been out 4 different times in 4 different areas that usually produce and nodda this year.  I’m even having a hard time just finding fresh sign even. Is anyone else noticing this or is it just my bad luck? I was out in the South Wenatchee area. Colockum, etc… just seems strange to me not to even find fresh sign in areas I almost always see them. I’ve got about 45 miles in the boots so far and nodda.

I dunno, but the lack of a snowpack, coupled with ample rain, means there will be edible vegetation EVERYWHERE.  That is probably your answer: You are not finding elk in their normal holding areas for this year because they have dispersed.

Yep, that’s mostly what I was thinking too.  Just crazy how bad luck I’m having at even finding fresh sign this year.  Well, guess I just need to keep at it and head further back in.

Do you drive a white truck? Watched an (assuming) shed hunter drive right past these, not sure if they saw them

I got into elk up pretty high on Saturday here on the west side. In fact saw more elk in one place then I had seen in a very long time. Approximately 75 head on one ridge and double that throughout the day.

We saw a herd of about 20 on Saturday just 10 minutes from Lacey driving home from getting groceries.   The area is huntable

I saw elk on Friday (4/10) a few miles west of Ritzville on I90 (north side). Never have I ever seen them there before.

Earlier this spring I also saw a couple hundred a few miles west of Spokane (fishtrap) on I90 (north side). First time seeing them there too.

Feels like they are getting more and more comfortable back on the private flats with less predators around (cougars/wolves/bears).
