So I went to the last big one in Wenatchee three years ago.  It was my first one ever and I really enjoyed it.  I went to the regional ones after that and they were good as well.  I had to cancel going this weekend because of work.  Looking forward to hearing how this one was.

What were some of the highlights that you guys that went took away?

I am interested to hear from you in particular Russ as this was your first big one.

Wish I could have been there but you have to pay the bills so work won out this time.

Highlights;   

Great presentations on cougar and deer and wolf study's.  No matter what take you have on the issues.  Didn't get to the waterfowl one.

IMHO,  Mitch Strobl  from Kalkomey Inc had and gave the best presentation!!  All these years of using them, to find out who and what they DO for the "worlds" hunting community was priceless!

Loved the opening Pledge of Allegiance ceremony,  the guy dressed up as a  Patriot and his poem was fantastic!!

Not much in the way of being better instructors, but I think WE(instructors) do a bang up job, even in spite of WDFW's risk assessments set backs from a couple of years ago.  Almost burst out laughing when the guy told about the instructor loosing a few fingers as to WHY we can't do the "powder" demonstration any longer!!  That happened years ago before "risk assessments" had become a corporate practice.

Friday was not the good as it could have been,  Some one should have been aware of Apple blossom weekend activity's taking place.  Most of the gun club could not be used because of the racer's coming in. 

That's my take over the weekend, and I'am sticking to it!!

I agree about Mitch hitting a home run. He was prepared, established a rapport with the instructors by showing that he hunted, expressed respect for the instructors, demonstrated a humility and willingness to listen and learn from the group, and was entertaining.

Most of the WDFW employees that presented should watch a video of his talk and learn from that...

X2.  Loved Mitch for sure.  Friday was ok to but to be able to shoot is always a good day.   Sorry but to see a race track there.  I skipped dinner and went to the track.  Presentations are good but they're was no time in between to mingle and look at what was out in the hall way.  Hear is my thought but maybe I am new to HEI but things were presented pretty straight forward and understandable.  Maybe it eases just insults that are hard of hearing but why ask the question 2 or 3 different times.  Hey the guy that did de-escalation was good to.  I split on Sunday after Mitch.  Good information but I also got some networking in for the NWTF and turkey hunting.

Thinking back to the last one I would agree that there was more that didn't apply to being a better instructor than did.  At that one there was good information about being an instructor but I got more out of the updates on overall department stuff.  I thought there was good information on topics that no matter what side you were on at least you could see the angle they were looking at it from.

As for speaking in front of groups, it takes a special type of person to pull that off.  You either have to be a natural or really come prepared.

Thanks again for the feedback.  I look forward to hearing what members of our team took away from the IST and talking more one on one with Bob and Russ.  TF hopefully I can make it to the next IST and we can meet up then.
