Ideas for stuck pins
« on: June 07, 2018, 11:59:54 AM »
So, I have a Marlin Model 80 DL .22 that I sorta inherited (different story).
Ever since I've had it, it has feeding problems where the nose of a .22LR will bump the top of the chamber and get stuck. Not a huge problem, but the reason for it is a broken spring.
After searching online some, I read some descriptions (no pictures available) about needing to separate the barrel and receiver by removing a pin. Ok, I think I can do that, except I found the pin in question, and it's stuck. I was not able to move it with any reasonable amount of force. It's possible (not sure how likely) that someone might have tried to remove it before. In my online reading it was mentioned that it's a tapered pin, and will only come out driven left-to-right. So maybe someone hammered on it from the right side? There was some obvious damage on the right side (round ejection side).
Anyway, any ideas I should try? Or is it time for the gun smith or the junk pile for this rifle?
Thanks!

There shouldn't be any need to junk that rifle.

If you have bench vice with padded jaws or other means to securely hold the rifle, heat gun, a good steel punch, hammer(s), and penetrating lubricant such as Kroil.

I suggest applying penetrating lube to both sides of the pin and let that seep/creep in as long as you're willing to wait. With Kroil you can leave it there over night and it will still be there the next day, not evaporated. Securing the rifle in a padded vice, drift the pin out with hammer and punch. I don't know what size your pin is so I can't say how much force you'll need.

If that doesn't get it moving without bending or breaking the punch, apply heat from the heat gun and get it heated up. Be careful not to burn yourself on the metal.

Lastly, if you're concerned about marring the finish, degrease the area and apply masking tape around the pin hole for incase you slip.

Thanks so much, that's really helpful information. Sounds like a good excuse to get a heat gun, too! :IBCOOL:I'll give these a try, and update with how it went!

You’ll need the heat gun for your electrical projects that include heat shrink tubing. ;)
