Thinking about upgrading to CVA Accura V2™ Nitride....
« on: July 01, 2018, 08:27:21 PM »
So after 8 years with a borrowed .54 cal Lyman I’d like to upgrade given the new law allowing 209 primers. My questions are, so I even need the NW version if I only plan on hunting in WA? Can I get the NW version and convert to the standard 209 primer breech plug (un-exposed)? Any help is greatly appreciated!

I have that exact rifle.  Yes, you could get a NW legal and convert it but if you're only hunting WA, no need to buy the NW legal version.  Just buy the standard model that accepts 209 primers.

If you wanted Blackhorn 209 powder, there is a separate breech plug you can buy that is optimized for that.  But otherwise just buy the standard model and use triple 7 powder or whatever powders are your favorite.

Thanks, I appreciate the advice! I’ve been reading the reviews on muzzleloaders.com and they sound fairly unreliable on musket caps, I would think this would not be the case with 209’s?

I didn't have too many issues with my Accura V2 with musket caps on reliability.  I think I had 2 non-fires (those were the caps, duds) and one hangfire out of all the years I had it as a NW legal.   Which given how wet it is in WA, that's not bad.

With Blachorn 209 I shoot my Accura quite a bit more than I did when it was NW legal.  Cleaner burning, more enjoyable for me to shoot.   Haven't had a single hangfire or non-fire with 209s either.  I'm sure I'll eventually get a dud 209 cap, but so far it's been great.

That’s not bad at all, I’ve had times where it took 4-5 caps to go off, and many hang fires. My caps were older however.

Also, keep in mind, if you buy the 209 version and eventually want to hunt in Oregon or Idaho, you can always buy the Musket components then. Your best bet is to probably buy the 209 version, as it will keep your costs down. The likelihood of you using the Musket components will be extremely low, as Oregon has also discussed changing to 209 in the near future.

That’s what I’m thinking, if I get a wild hair to go there I can always take the Lyman if need be. It’s looking like muzzleloaders.com has the best price by far..

Get the 209 breechplug for that gun. Then get one of the three hottest primers. Hotter gives you better odds of fire in bad weather.

Weaker primers are fine in dry weather, plus they keep surrounding equipment cleaner. Here's three hot ones....

Federal 209A
CCI-M(ag).... not the regulars
Winchester 209 (blue box)

Just bought my CVA Accura V2 from Muzzleloaders.com about a month ago.  Extremely happy with my purchase.

Check the prices at https://www.budsgunshop.com

Muzzleloaders.com is good about matching prices if you find a gun cheaper somewhere else.

I wish you had commented about a day earlier, I ordered it Thursday night! Oh well, I only paid an extra $15. Looking forward to shooting it!
