Thermacell
« on: March 15, 2009, 10:18:04 AM »
I've been hearing about these and I'm wondering if they're worth the money.

Does anyone here use it? Do they really work as well as they claim? Do they smell?

I have one and it works, but it does have a slight scent. I have to think that if I can smell it, so can the critters.

They do?  I guess my sense of smell isn't very good.

How long does each 'cell' last. The box says twelve hours, but I'm skeptical.

Turkeys can't smell, and that is when mine get a work out.  It is the greatest thing since sliced bread.  They work and work really well.  If it gets so windy that they are innefective, the bugs are staying off of you anyways.  What the box says is true, for the butane and pads.  I would rather have my thermacell than my calls when turkey hunting the wet areas in the spring.

I use them when hunting Caribou when the bugs are exceptionally bad on the Tundra, if you haven't been with those bugs, you haven't had bugs before....Incredibly bad, bad meaning you can't drink, eat, sleep without a head net, gloves and duck taped boots and even then they get in your nose, ears, eyes and mouth...  But the Thermacell really works, I put right near my chest area and don't have the no-see-ems, whitesocks or the black fies getting in my face, although their hovering for when it runs out of juice, then it is game over.... in the eyes, mouth and ears...  Also worked perfectly while bear hunting in stands and never had a bear seem concerned with the smell it puts off... And it even repels the Alaska State bird, the "pterodactyl mosquito".....

They work very well. I've proven it to several hunting buddies. I got mine about 6 years ago. It smokes and does smell a bit, but I've been in bugs bad enough in Sept that I've had mine (with the carry case) clipped to a belt loop and stalked/killed a deer with it. Even if you don't use it while stalking, it's a great tool to have in the pack for any time you know skeeters can be an issue.

Keep the wind in your face and you won't need to worry too much about the smell.

 :yeah:

I seem to recall the butane cartridges last about 8 hours... maybe it's 12 but 8 sticks in my head.

BTW, the longer butane cartridges used in curling irons, etc. can be found in the dair care isle at your favorite store. They work just fine. Only difference is they are longer so you can't replace the butane cover on the ThermaCell. But they are cheaper.
