I haven’t shot an elk with the SST but quite a few deer with them. My experience was the opposite having them expand drastically, one exploded on a spine shot, one had jacket/core separation, found another fully mushroomed but intact still. I like accubonds but will be trying the ELD-X I’ve heard good things.
I think you missed the muzzleloader part :chuckle:

What was the range of your shots?  Should also ask powder load?  How far did they penetrate into the animal?  Pointy bullets not the option I would choose from a muzzleloader, even though they are the choice of a lot ML hunters coming from a center fire rifle to a ML.  BC is not that big of a deal in 200 yards - impact and 'Terminal Performance' IS!

And the last question are you looking for a better bullet than the SST - becuase they are certainly out there!
Keep shooting muzzleloaders - They are a blast!!

i have used the 300 grain power belt since they have come out and they will absolute dump an elk and are devastating on deer.  they are hard enough that if you dont smash them loading that they are really accurate.  I push them in like the first and cheapest traditons myzzy...  piece of crap but it kills for me just fine  i think my dad bought it for me for 85$ a long time ago  i just know where it is going to hit  few elk and deer and cougar done with it...

But bottom line find what works out of your gun and if you can get it into the lungs or vitals it will work and really does not matter
Shoot straight Shoot often

I shoot a 400 grain Harvester hard cast with sabot.

Absolutely devastating wound channel.

Of course, any decent muzzy bullet thru the heart/lungs should kill any elk quickly.    They are tough.  They aren't magical.

I use Barnes T-EZ 290 grains. They are all copper and brilliant. I did some terminal ballistics testing a few years ago using several bullets. The Barnes was hands down the most consistent. Shot into water jugs and wet newspaper and then into plywood and wet newspaper. The Barnes looked identical after both. All others went from barely expanded to blown into pieces. My brother shot a cow at 60 yards with Barnes bullets and blew straight through a 3 inch maple limb 10yards in front of the cow and the bullet still broke her front shoulder and penetrated to the heart. There maybe comparable bullets but I can’t imagine a better muzzleloading bullet.

Exactly....two totally different killing programs.  I have to admit I have never killed an elk with a muzzle loader.  I have killed lots of elk with centerfire and many different calibers and bullet weights.  Without question the bullets that punched holes all the way through kill much better than those that dont...in my personal experience.   As the velocity drops the bullet size/weight needs to increase.   Everything matters and nothing is the same...if your shooting at 200yds...you need much different than 50yds.   So everything is a compromise.  Running data...I came up with something in the 300gr projecticle at 1900+ fps that holds together and penetrates.   I settled on the 290 Barnes based on what my gun shoots well.    I will say the 300 XTP is a good performing bullet also.

Barnes TMZ 290.  Bull elk never got out of bed, just rolled over dead (not the one in my avatar!).  I will always use these!

Deadly...

A Lehigh .425x265 CF bullet.  It really comes very close to matching the Terminal Performance of the brass .458's.  But the real advantage for you there are 3 different thicknesses of sabots for a 45cal x 50.

This ballistic was computed shooting 120 gr. T7-2f - but using 120gr by Vol. of BH209 will add another 50-75 FPS to the velocity of the bullet.

But!!! Got to admit a lot of people like Barnes... I tried them for a while in my centerfire days but ened up switching to Nosler Partitions which for me gave better overall and all-around results....

In the beginning I was using Nosler Partitions even for ML hunting - then along came the Lehigh creation - first the Bloodlines and now the all copper CF bullets.

And as mention they a completly different theory of operation (developed in Germany) than the normal mushrooming bullet.

Keep shooting muzzleloaders - They are a blast!!
