Okanogan River is still only 67 degrees, which is good for future returns but means no thermal barrier to stack up fish at the mouth. However, good numbers are moving through. Below Wells seems comparable to mouth of the Okanogan right now, with good fish numbers moving through. Success has been very variable, from fast limits of Chinook and sockeye both, to total skunkage. I have not been fishing, but have a large number of friends and acquaintances who participate.

we hooked 22 fish below wells in 3 hours..6 hatchery kings and a pile of sockeye all on King setups.

Keep eyes open on WDFW page for updates heard they may close Chinook in 48 hours

What does a guy use for sockeyes in that stretch? You don't have to give away your secrets but just a taste would be helpful. I will be taking the family to Bridgeport next weekend and may want to spend a morning trying to kill a fish or two.

I don't know if this carrys over but our sockeye set was a small didger, think humpy sized, and two plain red or purple hooks on on a short leader. On lake Washington that was the standard set up.

Ah....the State and their wonderful harvest framework. TAC downgraded the Summer Chinook run to 44k, which leaves a 70 / 30 split of harvestable fish to the Colville Tribe, This is above Priest Rapids to Chief Joseph Dam. With their math, this leaves 3,869 hatchery Chinook available for harvest, so only 858 for the sport fishermen. The problem with their math is there are already 5,000 hatchery Chinook above Wells Dam, and 9,000 Chinook between Rocky Reach Dam and Wells Dam...and about 80% of those are marked hatchery fish. Apparently managing the fishery and selling licenses isn't a top priority?

I have only fished them one time at Bridgeport, but did good using a small dodger, short leader with a small red squider and a coon shrimp. fishing the top 20 ft of water. they weren't to hard to catch the time I went, they are small fish though. a 4lber seemed to be a big one.

That section has already been closed for Kings since last saturday the 7th. They will close Priest Rapids to Chief Joseph this weekend for kings as well.

We took home a few limits of sockeye and 2 hatchery kings from a recent trip. Was happy to get a few filets for the freezer.

Huge bummer to fisherman and the groups and communities that were going to host the derbies. I'll probably still take one trip for sockeye, but it's unfortunate it shut down so quickly.

I was up there last weekend didn't see many kings caught.We lost one and were able to get some nice sockeye.Lots of people not sure how many will go up there just for sockeye.I'll try again soon.

You said you won't be back to fish for sockeye, just curious if you thought it wasn't worth it or maybe the crowds are to big e.t.c. I was thinking about making a trip over there and trying to gather some info. Thanks.

not a sockeye guy, tug is the drug for me and sockeye don't do it for me.. Ill eat them and keep them if we catch them king fishing, but im not traveling 3 hrs and spending $130 in diesel and gas to catch a 2lb fish

Must not of been there Friday. Was lights out Friday. Then they dumped a bunch of water Friday late and it cleared out the boats and the fish. Didn’t get a hit after that. What boat were you in? I was in the flat bottom sled

we were there last wed evening till Friday am never saw a Chinook landed.. Friday we stayed on the king hole side with 7 boats and nobody touched fish that am before we left.

I was there Friday put in around 6:30.I was in the Idaho Boat on the eddy side.We had one hit and we were the last boat in.Fished the Falls sat morning saw a few caught but no us.We caught our fish up in the pool sat night Sunday morning.

We stayed over on the sockeye side. Saw 2 kings caught there Saturday morning. I saw the Idaho boat. Nice rig

If I may interject, I'm headed over with my 5 year old boy to stay at Bridgeport State Park for the weekend, never fished the Brewster Pool before. Which side is the King hole and where is better for Sockeye? I don't want to mess around trying to catch a King and only going for one morning. Any tid bit of info would be much appreciated. Thanks!

Just look for all the boats and do what they do there's no king sockeye sides that I know of.You can inside or out the fish around.Good luck you'll have fun.

Was at the Brewster launch today, lots of boats coming in with good sockeye catches. Most on the water were hugged tight to the bank below the Okanogan compared to when kings are open too.

Update:

First morning 7/20 got kind of a rough start, in the mad rush to get out of the house and get to Bridgeport state park for the weekend, left the downriggers leaned up against the shop where the boat normally parks

So decided to give it a go with banana weights. That took a while to dial in. People were catching all around us and we managed to scrounge up two for the morning- EXTREMELY FRUSTRATING! Wind was howling the next morning, took it off to hang with the fam at the campground and do a tour through Chief Joseph Dam- totally worth while. Tried it one last time on Sunday before the long trek back to the west side, took a while to pick up a fish- then decided to change up my gear (longer leader, put on a hootchie w/out smiley blade, tipped with sand shrimp) within 5 minutes picked up a second fish. 15 minutes later, we were limited. Could not believe tweeking a couple items made the world of difference. All in all, it was a good trip.... until my brakes went out towing a 28' travel trailer while coming into Winthrop. Spent the whole afternoon waiting for AAA to save the day with a tow for the truck and my buddy came back over to tow the trailer home. THANK GOD FOR AAA RV! I will venture over next year hopefully and try it again with a little more know-how.

All of the Columbia is barbless, for shrimp I used Rays.
