Home built Treestands
« on: August 11, 2018, 12:44:33 PM »
Anyone ever do this?  Not the big box/blind style, I'm talking more like the hang on, or similar stands.

Years ago I built one out of mostly wood, worked pretty good, but was super heavy and hard to get hung up. Kicking the idea around of attempting to weld one up...…(Not sure I wanna trust my own welds though) :chuckle:

I built one out of 1" square tube and expanded metal with a bunch of hang on steps around 30 years ago. It was cheap and worked well. very heavy to hang. It was only because I was young and didn't have a lot of money. I still have it and is hanging right now.
I'm not sure.

I made one with a larger place for my feet out of steel, as well as a steel ladder from scrap I had. Very heavy and hard to set up. I would only bother with a cumbersome setup like this if it is going to be on private property where you wont have to move it.

In archery we have something like the way of the superior man. When the archer misses the center of the target, he turns round and seeks for the cause of his failure in himself.

I’ve made a few, easy to do.  2x6 pressure treated wood, cut one piece longer than the other, like 6’ and 4’.  Bolt together on one end to make like a scissor, make two of these.  You lag bolt the shorter end to the tree, the longer side hangs down at about a 45 degree angle and lag bolt that.  I pre drill w a cordless drill so screwing in the lag bolts is easier, I’m usulally hanging on w one arm, lol.  You at that point can just screw pressure treated 2x4 pieces across your boards to make a platform, you can make a seat by leaving out a few boards or make some kind of seat.  It’s pretty easy and cheap, I use at least 9/16’’ bolts or 5/8”.
“In common with”..... not so much!!

made quite a few out of wood and metal both, that was years ago though and I wish I had them still around I'd hang them up for yard art  :chuckle:
the wood ones were almost art, I burned the grain on the boards for "camo" and weather proofing and stained them.

If you use expanded metal make sure none the cut edges stick out past the frame, good way to slice your arm trying to hang it (ask me how I know)   :'(
