10A Elk Hunt
« on: August 16, 2018, 08:53:39 AM »
Thinking about spreading the wings a bit and doing some out of state hunting.  Plan is to hunt 10A archery shortly after the open staying at Dent Acres by the reservoir.  At most I will only have 3 days to hunt in early Sept.  Plan is to hunt the state land just north and south of Dent in 10A. It's not a huge but not a small investment for me to go.  Looking for advice from anyone who has hunted 10A - Am I just wasting my time and money? Am I anywhere close to the animals? Any pointers so I don't show up and spend my first few days just scouting? Obviously I've been putting my time in on Onx, google, IF&G, forums, etc.  I'm mostly interested in meat - its hard to come by in Washington sometimes. :)

Buy a wolf tag, a few in that area.  With only 3 days, go with the moon phase dates. You can find elk just about anywhere over there, but they are very aware of wolves, they tend to be in small herds. If you call be prepared for a quiet approach, they tend to sneak in over there.  Be prepared for fly’s if you get one down, they can be bad, it will prob be hot. Have fun and stick with it ALL day.  Good luck

I believe that is an any elk unit for archery. A huntin buddy of mine just got back from a scouting trip from that unit and did get into a few elk but not a lot. He said same thing, wolves have hit it hard.

If you need another place to look, we ran into elk between Headquarters and the reservoir two seasons ago while deer hunting.

Not too many elk in the unit on usfs land. I did see 1 raghorn a few weeks ago. Wolves have been down low the last few weeks. Most elk I saw this year have been on private land.

For $600 just for licences alone, I really don’t think it will be worth your while for a 3 day hunt  :dunno:

:yeah:
If you only have 3 days, you better know exactly where they are!

Just to give the op an idea, I spent 47 days on the ground in the unit this summer and seen 3 dozen elk total on public land. The page in Idaho's pamphlet about elk objectives holds true.

Last time I checked that means 36. In 47 days? Sounds like I better look elsewhere.
