Dry Ice

I don't  have much experience with dry ice and am looking for tips on how to make it last.  From what I've read it doesn't last very long. I want to take a bunch with me for my moose hunt. Is there a way to make it last 7-10 days? Anyone have any tips?

Gallon jugs of regular ice in a good cooler will last a good long while in oct and November also.

That was my original plan but I was told no one in colville sells dry ice anymore. The closest is Spokane.

Just buy normal ice.
Is your plan to shoot moose, cut up moose, throw in cooler, pack camp and be home within 7 days of pulling trigger?

When I hunted in Wyoming. I would put dry ice in a dedicated cooler along with regular ice on day 1. The cooler was only opened to put meat inside, even the regular ice was intact 7 days later. These were just regular white Coleman/Igloo coolers, not these new $400+ coolers.     :twocents:

Or, if it's 40 degrees or colder. Shoot moose, cut up moose, line truck bed with a tarp, throw meat on tarp and drive to processor.
I know of two bison that made it here from South Dakota over the course of 2.5 days and no issues or even thought of issues were had.

Save every water bottle, gatorade bottle, milk jug, etc. you can and fill them 80% with water.  You'll create a ton of ice blocks at little cost.

Put them in the coolers and pack them as full as you can before you go.  After you kill an animal, put it in the cooler.  Hit a gas station on the way home and pack the tops with ice cubes.

Done.

I think you’d be better off with gel packs like they use in food delivery boxes (like Hello Fresh, Gobble, etc.)  People who use these services usually give them away and they last a long time if you keep them insulated.

I keep a cooler just for ice blocks and put dry ice on top at the beginning. They don't even start melting for 4 days and it's a coleman extreme cooler that I got for $70. I used me Yeti money to pay the mortgage.

I used me Yeti money to pay the mortgage.

Having Yeti's is almost a curse.  I got two for free and I get strange looks every time I use them.  I have to explain regularly "Nope, I'm not the type of guy with the cash to spend this much on a damn cooler."

Thanks for the tips. My main concern with using normal ice is with wanting to keep the meat dry. But frozen jugs should work.

Rather than saving jugs and bottles, buy flats of water in the 16 oz. bottles, freeze, and have fresh drinking water as they thaw.
