Truck tent on top of canopy?
« on: September 25, 2018, 09:12:30 PM »
I’m looking for a truck tent that goes on top of a track canopy.  I want the full use of the space under the canopy but still have a tent on the truck.  The bed tents seem useless to me since you have to empty the bed to use them.

My idea is to have a hunting rig with all the gear in the canopy and a tent on top and I can stop anywhere to get some shut eye.

Is there such a thing?

kinda thinking same thing, but think I'll just go for a trailer that'll handle rough off road and haul a quad.

I went the opposite direction.  I bought a used truck vault drawers from another member on this forum, and just sleep on top that platform under the canopy.   And keep my guns/gear in the drawers underneath.  Works well.  And plenty of room for my big cooler next to me in there as well if I'm solo.   Or put my cooler in the backseat of my crew cab, if there are two of us.   I even made homemade velcro mosquito screens for the side windows and back window inside the canopy that I can take off and reinstall easily when I get to camp.

I did the same but I built the drawers. I just slept on top of it for 10 nights and heading out again later this week for another 3.  I really like the setup but I can see where a roof tent might be better other than having to open and shut it every time I move spots very often.

The links provided in some of the responses were ones I hadn't seen so thanks for that.  I guess I should have asked for suggestions of those people have used.  I found a few as well doing some googling but reviews were mixed.

Did something like this in 93 on a trip up to AK.  Had a new truck but the canopy had not come in yet.  The canopy place loaned us a taller than cab canopy (also had canoe on top), made some cross pieces with a piece of plywood for a bed platform, everything else, including coolers, fit underneath. It was very convenient.

Make sure your canopy will handle the weight without cracking.
