Montana 2019 ?
« on: September 22, 2018, 10:13:02 AM »
I am starting to plan an archery elk hunt in Montana next year. I have never hunted there and I am just starting to research it. Any help would be appreciated, I know nothing about Montana regs or areas yet. I am planning on several scouting trips over the next year. This would be a DIY hunt. Thank you for any help.

Just beware that Montana isn't an automatic draw for big game combo licences anymore. While chances are still good it's not guaranteed unless you buy a landowners tag, etc.

I would spend some time looking over this year's regulations so you get an idea of what you need to do. Lots of info on their website to sift through that will help too.

You have to apply in March.  Elk only is easier to draw than elk and deer combined.

Ive elk hunted in about a dozen different places in montana during archery and rifle seasons. All of them public land and theres only one, maybe two spots ive said id never go back to. You do a bit of looking and youll find elk.

Buy a landowner tag? Ive had “landowner sponsor” tags from relatives, but didn’t know they can sell them.

But how do get started and decide which landowner tags to buy?

You don’t need a landowner tag. Just start doing research now, use the state hunt planner feature. Lots of public land that holds elk

How far east can you go and still find decent herds of elk. I would like to hunt elk in like a high desert area. Always himtwd elk in heavy timber areas.

Check out the breaks around Fort Peck.  I believe it is a draw now, but not overly difficult.

There are NO landowner sponsored tags in Montana, Landowners can receive tags, but they can not sell them or transfer them, except to actual family living on farm or ranch or hired hands.

That’s weird.. I’ve got landowner sponsor tag 5 years in a row along with my friend. Unless this is something new, I disagree. This was for deer only though.
