elk and clearcuts
« on: October 23, 2018, 08:15:54 AM »
How long does it take for the elk to start using new clearcuts? I found one scouting this weekend  kinda off the beaten path, most all of the equipment was gone except the loader and a small deck of logs. I'm guessing they will be out by the end of this week. Will the elk move in there or will there even be anything for them eat to draw them in a fresh cut?

It depends on when the burn happened (time of year) as well as the cut itself as well as the availability of food elsewhere and the elk's general travel patterns.  Once there is fresh grass or forbs, elk may use it, but it's all on their schedule.  They could be in there right away or never get around to using it.  Check the burn for new growth and then for elk sign.

I saw elk this year using a new clear cut before the equipment was gone, so still active. If you have fresh sign then their probably using it.

It's all about whether there is feed there or not.  The elk are used to logging and equipment, so they won't be scared away by logging activity for long.

I've seen them in cuts right after operations.  They travel through almost immediately.  Usually the following spring before grass starts to pop up though.

I've seen elk in units in the early mornings and late afternoons when the loggers aren't there.

I know some loggers who've shot elk off the job site over the years.
