Rattling in blacktails
« on: October 29, 2018, 03:06:13 PM »
We're taking my daughters friend out for her first deer hunt this late season for modern and was thinking about doing some rattling and grunting is this too late in the season?
Any tips would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks
Jim

I think it would be good now. Some guys stomp and break branches but I've never tried that.. use larger antlers or you'll smash your fingers haha

Friends of mine just showed me a video of them rattling in a blacktail buck they had spooked off this last Saturday. I guess it was ripping into a small tree, then got whiff of them, slowly wondered off, then they rattled him back to them super close. Right now is the absolute best time I would think  :dunno:.

My dad shot a buck Friday evening that was in full rut..  This is prime time in my opinion!!  A ton of movement this weekend.

Will the rut still be going on usually during  the late season middle Nov?

Might be the tail end of it. I have a friend in Oregon who thinks we are extremely lucky to have that late hunt.

Rattling will be effective through the end of the late seasons.  Less so later than now perhaps, but you're not going to scare bucks away rattling, unless you go crazy with it.  Grind 'em 15 seconds to a minute or so, then rest for a few minutes.  Repeat, then rest longer.  Think about how BT bucks determine dominance. Push and shove.  It is apparently a pretty rare thing that they full out fight like WTs, but it does happen.

Does throwing in doe bleats work much?
Was thinking about using 1 or grunts  while hiking in to hunting spot to start rattling or is it better to sneak in quietly and give it a few minutes of quite before starting to rattle?
Sorry about all the questions but we're taking my daughters friend out for her first hunt ever and just trying to get as much info to up her odds
Thanks again everybody

No worries at all.  We've hashed it out over and over. You can get a full dose of information with some research here.  Good luck with your hunt.
