Best "Hunting" long range scope....
« on: November 05, 2018, 06:13:44 PM »
What's the best hunting long range scope Wanting a good scope that will be able to dial in at 800+ yds but don't want all the tall turrets, but want high magnification for my old eyes...
Looking pretty seriously at Leupold VX-5, but dang I like my Nightforce magnification....

vx5 is a great choice, super clear and 800 is doable with that turret and most cartridges.

Love my VX-5 3-15x44 on my 300 win mag. Swarovski z-5 is another good hunting scope but doesn't dial to 800

Another vote for the Vx-5.

There may be other scopes that will dial farther or have better glass, but Leupold is still hard to beat for hunting scopes because of their size and weight.

I’ve run a few different myself and shot plenty of others.  There’s some really knowledgeable guys on this forum.

Most topics such as these revolve around an important question.

What’s your budget?

The best scope is probably going to run you $4-5k.  You may want to mention your budget and I'm sure there are plenty of guys around here that can steer you well.

I have a vx5hd and a vx6hd and with a 20moa rail you'll get close to 1000 if not further.  They are both great optics for longer ranges.

Schmidt and Bender dropped the prices on their PM II, they're around 2-2.5K now, used to be 4-5K. At that price range, there's literally no scope in the world that can compete with it. Mechanical accuracy and clarity of that scope are just beyond excellent.

Your going to get lots of opinions, I’ve had the huskemaw scope for about 14 years. I just shot my bull in Wyoming with one of their newer scopes, very nice and easy to use.  Yes it has a turret, but get your yardage and dial it, if no wind, shoot.  My older scope is on my .300 win mag A bolt.
“In common with”..... not so much!!

If a scope limits out on adjustment, there is always the option of installing 10, 20, 30moa base to gain that extra elevation.  If he is planning to shoot that far more than one time I would recommend it from the start, there really is no downside to it.  I knew I might stretch the range on my gun so I went straight to a 20moa right when I bought the gun.

The VX-5 I am showing has 58moa of total adjustment, if perfect zero out of the box that leaves 29moa of elevation to work with, which could be right on the ragged edge for 800yrds with a little hold over.

OP never listed caliber, my lowly 308 is 9.1MIL (31.26moa) to zero for 800yrds, <2turns of the turret on my scope (not a VX-5) and I have much more than that available with the 20moa base.
