CZ 527 gets my vote. I got the american stock version and put a 2-7x33mm scope on it. The steel case hornady SST ammo shoots MOA out to 200 yards. Super fun and cheap to shoot. Just one deer so far but it did a great job with that SST bullet. You can always have the barrel cut shorter.

I agree with goldenring, I bought a 527 in 7.62x39 back in Tennessee for deer and ended up taking a whole mess of em with it, plus some coyotes and other random undesirables, all with the Hornady sst load.
Practical accuracy and a packable rifle.
Blued steel and walnut is always better.

Usually the ""7.62 Russian" is the 7.62x54R.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/7.62×54mmR

The 7.62x39 rarely gets referred to as the 7.62 Russian

I just looked at a Howa Mini in 7.62x39 today and it looks like a nice little rifle.  I shoot a 6.5 Grendel in a Howa Mini which is a former  wildcat 6.5 based on the 7.62x39 case.
now that you say that I knew that about the Russian thing. Sorry for the faux paux. If I could find a Grendel I'd probably buy that instead but I can't find one that fits my criteria. So I can load .308 caliber bullets? I thought I was stuck with .310/.311? Sorry if that's a dumb question.
You probably won't get very good accuracy using .308 bullets. I'd advise sticking with .310/.311" ones instead. Luckily, Hornady makes their InterLock and SST bullets in the right size though (they aren't the only ones who make .310 hunting bullets either).

200$ gun

I remember when big 5 was selling em for 75$

The good days. And tins of surplus ammo were $80.
Around $300 now for the rifle.

I wouldn't do it. The stores don't carry the ammo as much and you don't see it discounted like 223. AKs just aren't as popular as they used to be.

223 bolts are great if you just want to shoot targets. Lot more fun than 22 but not as expensive as 308.

They can be found online, FMJ and some HP for 20-22 cpr. Steel case though.
Can buy the fancy ammo online as well, just a few boxes would suffice if you have the cheap stuff to plink with.

Yea am aware of that and partly why I wouldn't do it. If you do a lot of plinking it is nice to be able to run to Wally world for ammo.

The Cz barrel length are an issue for me.(I have a 527 in .223 and love it!) the howa just doesn't do it for me. I have nothing against them I had one and it was a fine gun just not what I'm looking for right now. The rarr really appeals to cost and I just wanna play with one

Did you buy? I really wanted a RARR in 223 for the specs but every time I handled one in person I’d talk myself out of it

I almost bought the 16" ranch until I tried it in person. Too short for my taste. Would probably make a good truck gun though.

 :yeah:

Besides the scar on my left shoulder from a 7.62x39, just won't let me buy one, let alone shoot that crappy ammo again.
