What would be a good resource for getting info on training gun\bird dogs? Books, web sources, i'm just interested in learning. I'm a few years out in having the time/space for a dog but I'd just like to do some research.

Water Dog, Bird Dog, and Game Dog

In my opinion you cant buy a better book they are awesome. I have water and bird dog so I would assume that the other one is just as good.

Dog Clubs, Retriever or Pointer Clubs, whichever you need, You go out and Train with others that have made the mistakes already and can help you avoid them, and can help you avoid creating problems with your Dog that need to be fixed later.

I highly suggest getting Joan Bailey's book "How To Help Gun Dogs Train Themselves". I am reading it now and even though I have trained dogs before I am finding a lot of good advice in her book. Some people might say it is geared towards the versatile breeds, but the information applys to all dogs. I am using in it in training my five month old GWP and can really tell the information is helping me "condition" her better. Another book that my first breeder reccommended, from buying my 8 year old boy, was that I get "The Art of Raising a Puppy" by the Monks of New Skete. I believe that they are from New England or New York. The information contained in this book delves into the pack mentality of the dog and how they react to you. Great book and great information. Combine these two books and Water Dog and you will have a great dog.

Both of these books are great reads and will help you become a successful dog owner no matter the breed or if you are going to use them for hunting. If you already own a dog they may help you understand your dog even better.

Very good and proven methods. 

Stay away from the dog phsycology books on training.  The few that I've seen remind me of child care books for new parents that were written by people who never had a kid.

Intruder, fisheral87 is looking for help in what I am assuming is having a future hunting partner and household friend. Not that I want to get in a pissing match, but I feel that you took a shot at the reccomendations that I made. I am not sure if you have read either book, but both are written by people who own and train dogs. "The Art of Raising a Puppy" was reccomended to me by my breeder who happens to be a senior judge for the North American Versatile Hunting Dog Association (NAVHDA). This is someone to whom I was paying $700 to get a dog from. The reccomendation was not taken lightly and what I learned was beneficial in raising, living, and hunting with my dogs. Like fisheral87 I spent about two years reading everything I could get my hands on before purchasing my first dog and have read the three books you reccomend. They are also a good source of information and I hope that fisheral87 does read them, but they are not the only books out there. If you get a chance, read them and let me know what you think.

Most clubs hold regular events on a year round basis. I would highly reccomend that you contact some of them in your local area and find out when and where they are holding their trial or hunt test. Go down and meet the guys and gals there. Most will be super friendly and you can watch them work their dogs as long as you don't get in the way. This will give you a better perspective on the different types of dogs and how they work.

AKC Hunt Test at Bob Peppers Farm. It is located just south of the intersection of West Snoqualmie Valley Road and Novelty Hill road. The address is Carnation although, it is closer to Duvall. There are over 167 dogs entered in stakes ranging from Master Hunter to Junior Hunter. All walks of people, levels of trainers and dogs show up. Spectators are always welcome, there is no fee for watching. Bring a chair with you. Dogs will be running by 9am.

I'll be in the gun station shooting live flier ducks all day for the senior hunt test. I am running Kaie, my Chessie in the senior A test. I think I am number 16. If she passes Saturday, she will have her AKC Senior Hunter title.

Anyone interested come on and show up at the test. Look for the truck that was stuck in the "what did you do on Easter" thread....that was me.....Paul aka "Happy"
