Toyota 4 runner vs Chevy Tahoe

Those are both good rigs that will serve their purpose you just need to decide what that purpose is. In my opinion a 4Runner gets small pretty quick for a family and gear.

What years of each?  or maybe how much are you looking to spend?   4skinr is a great truck but is on the small side, you might consider lx470/Landcruiser or lx570/LC if you want to go newer and have some size and tow capacity.

I know you said 4Runner vs Tahoe, but Toyota Sequoia is the best of both worlds IMO. You get the size and comfort of the Tahoe and the dependability of Toyota. We have a 2008 with 170k it’s been great no probs and is a capable vehicle off road and very safe. Lots of power with the 5.7  but pretty crappy fuel mileage. If this one ever dies my wife wants another one. Oh and the sequoia has a locker also

go toyota all day long. ive got a sequoia, tundra and tacoma, all are tanks and great. for your scenario, id suggest going sequoia for the room with having a family and eventually friends wanting to go places. it works well for our family anyhow. good luck in the hunt

Im trying to keep it around $35k and under 20k in miles so that probably rules out the sequoia. With those parameters and still wanting a few bells and whistles, I think the Tahoe or 4 runner will probably be the best bet.

More comfortable, more power, real towing capability.
Toyota is the most overrated car on the road.

Actually let’s make a list:

2006 TRD Sport crewcab 6sp manual, every available option.

Rear leaf springs flat before 3 years old. Not from being a truck, from being cheap garbage. Recall came out 6 years after I called Toyota corporate and they called me crazy.
Frame rust recall. Do you have any idea what holds your burley, manly Toy together?  The cheapest steel they could find. A truck that LITERALLY falls apart at 5 years?  Are you kidding!!!?
Wheels corroded so badly at 3 years old, it was embarrassing.
Rear window rattled loose while driving down out of Colokum (the rear glasscame loose!  Unbelievable)
Gas door hinges rusted out and actually separated from the body. Worse design and execution of ever seen. China does better.
Radio and clock are the cheapest, lowest quality pieces of garbage. Worse than any other car I’ve owned in the last 30 years.
Rear tailgate that bends with a motorcycle in the bed. Permanent bent tailgate. Yep, your amazing Toy can’t load and transport a motorcycle.
The transmission gearing on the 6 speed manual I had was a joke. 2400rpm at 70mph cruise, reverse was so long, you would roast the clutch if you ever tried to back a trailer up any kind of grade. Horrible engineering.
Rear drum brakes. Really?! What is this, 1978?

 I haul an 18 foot duckworth and a 20 ft travel trailer with my Tacoma
Over all the passes on I 90 all the way to eastern Montana and back
Hauled a quad in the back for a few years
It’s a 2013 with 70k on it and I love it and  I use it and take care of it
Oil changes and filters plugs
That’s it
Biggest complaint I have is too small a gas tank

The 4runner is the wife’s

I’ve had a 07 Super duty 6.0 and a 96 power stroke 7.3s
The wife had a Denali , and a K5 and I do currently have a beater surburban
All were decent rigs and they went down the road

I had to battle corporate over the leaf spring deal my self on the taco. It does have some chinsy stuff on it, but over all Ive been happy with the reliability. Besides maintenance, Ive just had a hub bearing and cv boot go out and the A/C.
Thats good considering what some of my GM rigs have had go down.
Still, I appreciate all the feedback. Its why I asked.

Lemons happen. Doesn't matter the manufacture, My personal story was I Bought new 2010 TRD Offroad Tacoma did not abuse, But used heavily. 170,000 basically trouble free later and sold for nearly 2/3rds what I paid. Might have got more but the buyer flew in from phoenix and I didn't want to see my baby running around  . I do share one thing in common with thinkinman tho, reverse was way to tall.

Tahoe or 4 runner either way is a good choice.  Like its been said depends on your individual needs. For me the argument for more room with family and gear is moot. The bigger it is the more stuff they want to take The reality was on extended camping (tent and cots etc) trips nearly everything that fit in the Tahoe also fit in the 4runner. Slightly more cramped yes, but not enough to warrant the increased operational expense. You still aren't hauling your 6th person in either with all gear. (No room in back of Tahoe when third row deployed.) So if leg room is priority then the Tahoe is better, but actually hauling family "stuff" capacity your gonna be putting a roof rack on either one.

  We do occasionally miss the third row. If you are actually using third row on a regular basis though as in family bigger than 5, or often hauling the soccer team don't get a Tahoe, there is no trunk space if third row is in use.
