Turkey second weekend in May?
« on: February 21, 2019, 12:37:36 PM »
Turkey hunting novice going out the second weekend in May. I'm going alone, public land, either NE or Klickitat. Wouldn't mind tagging along with someone more experienced if open to it. I hunt for meat and to get outside. Have a hunting partner for most of the rest of the seasons, but really want to take advantage of a free weekend in May to get a gobbler or two and some experience with this kind of hunting.

Let me know if you're interested in a hunt and send a PM my way with some info.

I'm not going to disclose too much personal information on a public forum - but, I'm early thirties, young family, prioritize safety, hunt to harvest meat and to be outdoors, drink responsibly and not whilst actively hunting. Thanks!!

Turkey season starts April 15th. By the time the second weekend in May rolls around most of the toms will be dead. The remaining ones will be silent and far and few between. It will be hotter than hell, the brush will be all leafed out obscuring visibility and the ticks will be gorging themselves on the last few remaining hunters in the woods like they are at an all-you-can-eat buffet.

Hunt higher elevations and that is a good time to hunt.

I agree have had great success during that time if the season.  Tom's aren't as vocal but they will still come in to decoys.

Second week of May is one of my favorite times to be out there... It's definitely harder to find birds (due to pressure throughout the season), but if you burn some boot leather and find them, you can find some very vocal, eager birds that time of the year  :twocents:

Opener on a Monday before thanksgiving which is crapping our styl this year. Looking at 2 nd week. Lots depends on weather. If it’s raining sure makes it tough.

We use to go in May and always seen birds.

Have fun.

I might be game this spring for a NE corner trip for Merriams. I've shot Easterns and have no interest in hunting for those whatsoever. Rio's are fun, but since I've shot several of those in KS, I'm just looking to check the Merriams off my list at this point.

You should have a good hunt, that's my favorite time of the season for several reasons including the fact that most other hunters have either killed or given up.

Let me know if you're serious and we can talk some more about it in PMs.

Late season is the best! I have harvested over 30 of my last 40 birds late season. Yes there might be ticks and hot weather, but that just means less hunters. The birds will be calmer, the hens on nests, and the Tom's lonely. Use just enough calling to let him know where you are. Then shut up and wait.

Are you going to try to leave Friday after work and come back Sunday? Or is it an extended weekend?

Haven't decided yet if I'll take an extra day or not.
