SxS vs Jeep
« on: February 26, 2019, 09:37:40 AM »
Last may I posted question about going with a jeep or SxS. Got good input on the pros and cons of both. Well I pulled the trigger on a nice 06 LJ Wrangler and I think now I should have gone with a SxS. The jeep for out of state hunting is going to be more work than I originally thought. I am thinking of selling or trading in on SxS if ATV dealers take jeeps in trade. Anyone out there find themselves trying to decide, make sure you spend some time in both vehicles before deciding.

The thought has entered my mind for the last year or so. If you don't mind taking a little time to explain why you changed your mind one way or the other that would be appreciated. I get the out of state thing but was there other factors?

No I don't think I know any that would trade-in jeeps.  However I do see cgslist adds on occasion looking to trade one for another??  Check out the Kawasaki Teryx for a utv which is priced good.  You cannot go wrong with it if its what ya looking for.  I just bought my 2nd one new for $13k. 4 seater.  Actually there is a small atv shop in Rochester that may swap used stuff around but not sure and not sure what they have to trade...

I will check that out. Thanks

After seeing the country and getting around in my buddies sxs, for me it comes down to need more than want. I have two 4x4 trucks which I want to keep. I will need something small to work and hunt out of. Hauling hay, wood etc, a sxs is what will work best for me. I have hunting dogs and at first I thought they could just pile in the back of the jeep but that isnt going to work. Plus the jeep I bought is really pretty nice and I dont want to beat it all up. There are good applications for both so I tried both and it looks like the sxs is what will work for me.

ITs interesting this came up.  A friend and I were just talking and I saw an SXS trailered go by and I said "Why not just buy a jeep". LOL

I would love one for out of state trips but I'm in the same boat. Tough to justify spending 15k on a glorified 4 wheeler when you can get an actual street legal vehicle for cheaper, something that you can actually get 80k miles out of. Then again who wants to haul a jeep or pickup all over the western US on a trailer!

Another benefit in case it has not been mentioned, on rough mountain roads you will get there 3 times faster with a sxs than a jeep.

I will probably just post it up for sale and see what happens. If it doesnt sell by hunting season I will use it. If it does sell, sxs shopping I will go.

Sxs out of state, any 4x4 truck in this stupid state. Cant even use a sxs here for the most part. I picked up a used yamaha rhino last year and put 1500miles on it. Never drove my truck after getting to camp for two long trips. Best investment ever. Paid 3500 for it

I've had Jeeps, 4x4 trucks and I can tell you the SxS is the only way to go. I belong to 3 clubs down here and the SxS, no matter what brand, rules. You can go more places than a Jeep.

Remember a SXS is around 1300'1700lbs, jeep around 3500lbs.  Jeeps do not go in a Toy Hauler typically.  Jeeps need modified which is thousands $ more.  Rough and slow ride.  Breakdown more.  Off road there is no comparison between the two imop.  Apples to oranges so whichever suits your needs is great.  Personally I see no need for jeeps.

I will also add that if you are thinking of Teryx the 2016+ models have better valved shocks.  Pre 16 were a little rough riding at slower speeds.  I know these machines so well anymore, work on em myself.  Tanks.  Oh and give Paulsons in Lacey a try.  They are great and will deal.  I have saved thousands with them.

Paulsons is the one place I havent been. I will go by there and take a look.

There is no "correct" answer, depends on where you are going, what you are doing. All the uses you need to meet. Do you need a second car sometimes? Do you need to tow or haul the vehicle? Are SXS legal for what you need? At least you are getting out and doing something!!!

I have them both, and i use them both for different things. As stated before, all of the places i currently hunt elk i can't run the sxs, so i run the Jeep. I will also say that the sxs is much easier to get un stuck.
