Lingcod Size Limit?
« on: February 26, 2019, 10:14:36 AM »
Planning a trip to MA 2-2 (Grays Harbor) and want to make sure I understand these regs. It appears that there's no minimum size for lingcod in this area? Wanted to double check, as all the other fish species that have no minimum they clearly state "no min size", but on lingcod they don't.
There's not a statewide minimum or anything, right? It's all by marine area? So in this case there's no minimum?

Yup. Trying to lower mortality and get people to keep the first 2 caught vs throwing back a bunch if i remember correctly

I don't buy that.  IMO it was a lobbying effort by the cattle boats to be able to keep everything they catch so no customer goes home empty handed.

A ling under 22 inches isn't worth keeping and would not be in my boat!

Some might argue that the sheer amount of throwbacks on the charters led to a higher mort rate than the additional retainage of everybody getting their 2 fish but.. you could be right I honestly didn’t look that far into it

:yeah: Mortality rate on released lings is very low...

Mortality rate is low on released ling but most charters won't allow you to release and keep fishing so this, in theory, would lower the total biomass harvested by forcing charter customers to harvest the first they catch.

I agree with Loki...its a way for charters to keep the boat limit quicker...the times I have been on the charters they want all fish kept that is allowed, and share the wealth on the slow ride back to the dock. I made sure that when I got a larger ling that I put my # tag on it and even told the deckhand that I wanted it whole, to make sure I got my larger fish instead of a few one-meal fillets.
