Quilomene?
« on: March 27, 2009, 10:01:27 PM »
Are there turkeys in the quilomene unit? I have have ties to property to stay just west of the unit. The wdfw turkey pamplet says meriams range in the area. The property is not too far from the quilomene ridge road. I am new to turkey hunting, so if not or very sparse, it is the far northeast I go.

There is a good population in the quilomene. I saw quite a few from the road when my dad had the buck tag about a mile back from the sage  in the southeast slope.

They are some but its really not worth hunting.  You might luck on to some but the chances are very slim to the NE.  I would recommend hunting the more stable populations and let the birds in central WA establish themselves.

There are birds in the Quilomene, but most of the populations occur in parts of the Malaga area on private land to the north.  But there are pockets of birds in draws.  Also birds moved to the West and South west over into the Nanum over the years.  Birds in NCW have had several years to establish themselves and harvest numbers in the Wenatchee Area ago up annually.  Also realize two things...you cannot kill every tom in an established population...and Most hens are bred prior to opening day so you will still have production.  I agree with Klickman however that if you want to increase your success go to the NE part of the state.
Wild Turkey, Walleyes, Whitetails and Wapiti..These are a few of my favorite things!!

Thanks for the input guys! Plan "A" is to go farther east, But if distance becomes an issue with my hunting partner, I was hoping to have a backup plan. I think I will at least scout the area and see if there are some turkeys, or some other upland birds to hunt when fall comes around, to keep my options open for next year.
P.S. The Quilomene is east/northeast of Ellensburg.

Seen a few in that area.  Real tough hunting em though.  Lots of pressure for so few birds :bash:
