Let's be safe out there.
« on: April 16, 2019, 05:54:45 PM »
Rumor has it a Turkey hunter got a few pellets to the face today north of Chewelah. That's all I know other than the hunter is ok. I'm not posting this to go on a rant about this incident just to remind those who hunt Turkeys to be  extra careful not to get shot or shoot someone else. I've been rained on by shot 2 times over the years and both times I was working a tom and someone snuck up on him and shot him raining me with shot. Both times the hunter grabbed the bird and got out of there.

Glad to hear he's going to be ok. Can't help but wonder if this was a result of someone stalking a turkey, either the guy who got shot or the guy doing the shooting. Too bad either way.
People get shot turkey hunting quite frequently.

You cut out the important part of my statement. Don't do dumb stuff and you'll drastically reduce your odds of getting shot.

thats what causes most of the incidents i've heard about, someone tries to sneak in on a turkey totally unaware someone is set up and working it, and then problems arise

But I don't want to get shot.

That's why I cringe when I see these getting sold at local stores.

Many times I like to hang an orange vest up in the tree I might be sitting against.  It's not just making sure of your shot, but you also have to be concerned about all the other guys and what they are doing.

That seems like a good idea.

I've ruined a few shots over safety.

I've seen other hunters trying to stalk turkeys that I was calling in.  It drove me nuts.  They *had* to have seen my blind, or at least known a call from a flock of birds moving toward a call.  When that has happened, I may or may not have stood up and yelled "BE GONE TURKEY TURKEY TURKEY!"

It's a ruined opportunity for me but it also helps to ensure a minimal amount of post-hunting trips to the ER.

Stalking turkeys is a horrible idea from a safety standpoint.

I've called in several hunters over the years that I saw lurking through the woods toward the sound of my hen yelps and hen decoy.  Guns in the high ready.  Quickly yell out and stand up hoping that don't confuse my movement for a bird.  Not a fan of the stalking technique.  As a precaution I've stopped using decoys unless I'm hunting private ground.

IDK to me it seems like a lot more work to try and stalk a turkey vs finding them sitting down and bringing the bird to me. Turkeys have good eye sight and hearing so the % of successfully stalking vs calling seems like it be a big difference.

Private property, 2 different sets of hunters. A father and a kid got there after the first hunters, father told kid to shoot, other hunter gets 4 or 5 pellets in the face. That's all the details I have.
