when do you start picking hunckleberries.  early july?  i went to a spot that apparently a lot of other people went to a couple years ago and they were picked over hard, anything remotly close to the road was picked and it seemed early  i dont remember the date i thnk early july, dont want to miss it this year  eastern washington panhandle idaho area

Picked the first ones in Naches area July 8th. Picked them through the first part of August, last year was great. Ended up with about 6 gallons.

lower elevations come off early in July and the higher you climb the later they are,
I was finding slightly overripe berries into very early September in the highest patches I know.

Mixture of both in the early season. Last batch we picked were dark purple/blue. We also picked a bunch just to eat while bear hunting in mid August. I just looked and the last time we went out in search was August 17th and we found a bunch.

The tiny red ones we start picking in July and the blues in August but the iron the wet side of the state.  When I pick in N Idaho for blues it's mid July-August and pick at higher elevations.

Mid to late June is when we often start. Then follow them up the mountain this pic was June 3rd last year. Not quite there but getting closer

This thread made me go and take inventory.  I've still got 8 gallons of the blues left so I might sit out a year.

I use old stock for juice as well.  Huckleberries, corn, a little 6 row barley, sugar, yeast and water.

We do jams with most of our berries.  That said I eat half the harvest while fresh.
