Pikeminnow reward
« on: June 06, 2019, 09:08:39 PM »
Went out the other day at the vernita bridge area and signed in. Took some time fishing and had 0 luck. Later found out surrounding areas have been hotter than the area i chose. I was not on a boat. Wondering if anyone has ever tried the reward fishing for these minnows? If so tips tricks and any help is appreciated. Pics are also cool! I will try again. I’d like to be able to catch a handful of these fish to turn in for the bounty. Thanks y’all!

I was wondering if these are like a secret such as other things! If i was making that kind of money i think tight lips would be a smart thing.

In the past 20 years there has been 2 times someone broke the 100k mark.

8700 is a big bunch of fish.  If you went out 200 days, you would have to catch over 43 fish each day.  I wonder if a guy would get so he dreaded going out after a while of that?

Read an article about the top fisher a couple years back, IIRC one of the $100k guys. He treated it like a full time job, on the water all day, every day. It sounded like he was pretty burnt out on the whole thing. I can’t remember all the specifics, but this guy was not doing it for fun anymore.

The fishing can be fun when it is on (isn't it always).  Top guy the last handful of years is a machine.  He knows the flows, bait and where abouts of the fish pretty well.  A lot of those top 20 guys are repeat guys for a reason.  It's a job if you want to be one of the best.  My kid has done well doing it since he was 16.  Works at it pretty much each day for the first two months, but then he is pretty much burned out after that.  Kind of tough to live on your boat for that long without much of a break!  It's afforded him some nice stuff though, as he owns his own boat (pretty nice one if I must say!) and truck and toys.  Tagged fish help out too!  $500 per fish is nice.  Some years he gets a handful, and some years none, just depends.  Last year his boat had 7 tags, this year 1 so far.  That's the game.  As far as how to fish for them and catch them consistently, the best thing to do is attend the state sponsored seminars when they are in town.  Usually it's one of the program guys who is giving the speech and they do offer up a lot of information on the technique and bait.  The thing that they never know though is where the fish will be.  This year's water has been different than the past few years (colder water), so the fish aren't super active yet, but it will be picking up here in a few weeks as the water gets above 60 degrees.  Good luck to all!
