Question on how 2nd deer tags work
« on: June 12, 2019, 02:35:12 PM »
So first, do i have to purchase a second deer tag, or does it just get mailed to me free?

The hunt i drew is "any weapon to apply" but i have an archery deer license.  so im assuming i have to use my bow, right? If so, i should be able to trade in my archery deer license for a multi season, and at that point i could use a rifle.  Or, having an archery deer license, could i choose modern as the weapon type on my second deer tag, rather than shelling out cash for a multi? Hope this makes sense, never drawn 2nd deer and not quite sure how it all works.

I think a second deer tag is $42

Yes you can buy the multi season deer tag and use whichever weapon for an any weapon 2nd deer tag

Does he have to buy the multi though? I feel like the tag would allow you to hunt “any” of it’s and “any” tag.... :dunno:

If you log in to your account it should be an option to buy. Did you draw MS deer?

Yes he would have to buy it, because his regular tag is archery.

Yeah i drew multi deer, but i just left for alaska, wont be home for a month.  ill have to buy my multi deer when i get back, since i have to hand over my archery deer license to do so..  Right now there is no option on wdfw site to buy my 2nd deer tag.  But ive also noticed theres no option to buy a 2nd bear tag, which is odd.

If your not going to be back by the deadline you can call and they will cancel your archery tag and let you buy the multi over the phone or online. They ask you mail the archery tag in. You don’t have to do it at a dealer like they will try to get you to do.

I was able to get on and pay for my second deer tag just now. Seems like they are getting things slowly sorted.

Ill just wait to buy my 2nd deer tag until after i trade my archery tag in for multi season, just to make sure they dont send me a 2nd deer tag that says archery on it.

Were you planning on buying the ms tag? If not it will save you some coin if you just shoot it with your bow.

Not worried about the coin.  id rather make it as quick and simple as possible.  Takes all the "make meat" pressure off of my late archery deer season.  With a rifle i feel i could run down and whack a doe in no time, and go on to other things, like cougar calling.

I think a second deer tag is $42

Yes you can buy the multi season deer tag and use whichever weapon for an any weapon 2nd deer tag

I don't think this would be true since the odds aren't the same for every weapon since for some areas they want more of a certain type.

You're applying for a specific gmu with a specific weapon.

The one he drew was for “any” tag type.

I also drew an "any season" tag and my understanding is that you get to hunt the entire time no matter the weapon. I have an archery tag as well. Normal season starts Sept 1st and this particular 2nd deer tag starts August 1st. Now you have me questioning it.

Yeah if you look at the regs, its "weapon needed TO APPLY" doesnt mean you can hunt with any weapon regardless of which license you have, it means you can get that permit regardless of which license you have.  Still have to use the weapon you chose for your license.  Thats why im going to buy my multi, so i can use my rifle to go whack my doe.  Not looking to try to stalk up on a group of does in open country.

You get to hunt the entire second deer season but it has to be with the same hunting method as your general tag.

It's not an "any season" tag. The tag required to apply for that particular permit was "Any." You applied with a archery deer tag, so your second tag will be archery. So you can only hunt with archery equipment. And yes, you can hunt the entire season shown for that permit.

I applied with an archery license.  Im going to switch to multi before i buy the 2nd deer tag, and if they send me a second deer tag that says archery on it ill be pissed, as this is the only reason im buying the multi.

I'm not convinced that's correct.

"You may hunt only with the hunting method in compliance with your tag...The second tag must be the same weapon choice as
your first tag."

As I read it if he has a multi-season tag, he should be able to hunt with any method.

Correct. Because if he has a multi season tag as his regular tag then his second tag would also be multi season per the regs so any legal weapon.

Yeah, I wasn't talking about if you purchased the multi season tag. Just that if your regular tag is archery, then your 2nd tag will be as well.

Per the game department..."your 2nd tag must be the same weapon as your first tag, which means you are limited to archery, but able to hunt with that 2nd tag anytime between Aug 1st- Dec 31st until you fill that 2nd deer tag for that area"

Vashon unit is the only unit open for a "any" weapon 2nd deer tag from August through December. So if you were drawn for that tag you can hunt that time frame with the weapon on your general deer tag. Not all 2nd deer tags are August through December. For example desert 2nd deer tag for modern is December 10-25
Kahlotus 2nd deer tag for modern Is December 9-17. So if you don't have a vashon tag you might wanna check the dates for the tag you drew

The first tag being the one you were required to purchase when you applied for second deer. You had picked a weapon to apply for second deer and only later did you find out that you won multi-season.

It wouldn't make sense to allow any weapon for a weapon restricted second deer tag. Some of those GMUs are restricted for a reason. For example they might want to reduce the deer population but without using centerfire rifles. There are also second deer tags where one weapon is a lot harder to obtain than another. Well multi-season deer isn't that difficult to get so you would be bypassing the system.

the question of this thread is because he drew a second deer tag that any tag holder could apply for. It wasn’t weapon specific like most are.

Probably gonna get told what an idiot I am for suggesting anyone talk to WDFW, but feel free to give them a call. 360-902-2200 . Follow the phone prompts to talk with hunt licensing folks. They have answers. I've done it multiple times.

Per the game department..."your 2nd tag must be the same weapon as your first tag, which means you are limited to archery, but able to hunt with that 2nd tag anytime between Aug 1st- Dec 31st until you fill that 2nd deer tag for that area"

True but he still applied for second deer with archery so the second tag will probably be for archery. I'm sure it is a separate system. You trade in your main archery tag for multi but that doesn't change your second tag. If you were allowed to switch your second tag to multi it would screw up the system. I can see arguing for an exemption for "any" areas but I doubt there is one.
