I’ve still got these 16 Oregon antlerless points for sale...

Oregon is going to change that "antlerless tag" stuff, the old 600 series antlerless will soon become true antlerless.  There was a couple units we took advantage of that allowed late rut muzz whitetails bucks.  That's gonna change. Our antlerless points are now that.

I dunno. People are pretty upset by it. Especially since they're leaving the Willamette tag in the 600 series. I'm going to the meeting on July 12th to let it be known. I wouldn't have invested the money in that series otherwise. They're getting push back.

I drew it in 2012 with 17 points. Missed a 34” wide 4x5. Biggest buck I have ever seen in the wild. I have been having her apply ever since.
A change in those points really would suck rocks.

As always, the lesson is that you should never wait 25 years for a hunt. Burn your points early because things change.

I don't care either way about the Umatilla hunts, but I do wish they'd changed the Willamette hunt to doe only. There's already OTC rifle for a full month, OTC bow for two months, as well as undisclosed numbers of damage control permits. The farm I work for just killed another two last month. I don't see that we need another 3000 buck tags that run from September to February. I hunt that tag yearly through a LOP and I wish they wouldn't let me kill bucks.

With the land available, the Willamette valley could be an incredible deer hunting spot, like a west coast Iowa, if they killed does to keep the population low and make the farmers happy, but left the bucks to grow a few years.

Actually, the lesson is there is always risk in waiting. When my wife and started saving points in the mid 90’s the intent was to draw a couple doe tags in central Oregon and go hunt with my mom. After a few years of 800 series points they combined it to the 600 series, thus sudd3nly making our 600 series totals very high. It was only then a hunt like Umatilla was possible.
This lesson is the same for every hunt. You never know when one particular hunt is going to change. Thus ending the chase.
I do not care about the Willamette unit or it’s hunts. It’s never been a goal or concern.
As to waiting, a hunt can only be valued by the hunter willing to wait to hunt it. We cannot judge the value of any hunt through our eyes unless we are the applicant.
A 34” wide mule deer is in my mind worth the wait. I have never missed a hunting season applying for it nor gone to bed hungry spending application and license fee money for the points.
So I have not lost anything other than some cash, and that’s always replaceable.
