Mountain Cutthroat
« on: June 22, 2019, 07:17:32 PM »
Some of you may remember my thread from last year but here are some fish from this year. Got back from a couple days of hiking and figured I should post up a few pictures! Don't know where the background went on the one picture, haha.

Yessir, actually two notellum lakes.  :dunno:  :chuckle: Not that I expect many people to hike in there but I don't want to risk it.

Yah, it was about a 15 mile round trip through some pretty rough country. Ran into a couple really nice guys in there, it'd be cool if they were on here!  :dunno: If by some chance you are and see this Pm me, I'd like to know how the rest of your trip went.

Packed into a lake this weekend I haven’t been to this year, it sure didn’t disappoint! Caught about 20-25 all this size, they sure put up a good fight.

Do you use a float tube or just fish from the bank?  All on the fly?

Most lakes I go with a float tube but waders or wet wading for this lake get me far enough from the bank. This trip I packed waders but never put them on, it’s a long ways to take a float tube. And yep all on flies. There was a huge mayfly hatch so I only caught one on a dry because there were so many other bugs to eat, most of them that I caught were on a size 8 pats stone.

The photo with the green water is cool in that you can see how thick the hatch is. Looked like some good sized mayflies.
Beautiful looking fish!

Amazing fish, seriously you could charge money to take people to those lakes!  I'd have to bring a pan and eat at least one of those bad boys.  My buddy and I tried to catch fish like that last year at a lake up high, tried everything, couldn't get them to bite.  You can see the fish swim by, huge!!

Started fishing the pats stone last year, been using them all summer and it is one heck of a fly for sure.

Okay, so when I google Pat's Stonefly, all I come up with is a rubber-leg nymph.  That's not what you're talking about, right?  You're fishing dries, right?  Can someone post a pic?

Yeah that’s it, I use jimmy leg pats  stones which are the ones with knotted legs. And on this trip there were too many other bugs on the surface for the fish to eat, I only caught one on a dry.

Sometimes it takes something just a bit different, to talk them into biting.

Definitely one of the best multipurpose flies out there. As ubiquitous  as a Hares Ear nymph. Good for stoneflies, large mayflies, dragonfly nymphs, sculpin, small crustaceans; and just overall attractors.

Hmm... thanks guys.  I'll have to tie some of these up.  Don't have any.  I usually don't do a lot of rubber-legs stuff, but I'll have to make an exception.

It’s a Echo 5 weight Small Water glass rod, got it as a present probably 4 years ago. I put a Amber Redington Rise on it to match. That combo has caught a bunch of fish.

You can't tie these yourself, for what they will cost you Online, (if before you fish them, you add a little extra Head Cement to keep them from unraveling).  ;)  To get them check out places like......
Hills Discount Flies
The Flystop
Percy’s Flies
Big Y Fly Company
Ascent Fly Fishing
They sell for around $0.74 Each
Buy 6 or more of this item for $0.70 each
Buy 12 or more of this item for $0.65 each

(and they look better than the the "Bugs" I have tied in the past). :chuckle:

Oh jeez...

I've already bought a 6.5 Creedmore this year.  I don't know if I can go that far down the rabbit hole as to start buying flies too...  I've been tying them since I was 14.  I don't know that I've bought a half dozen flies in my whole life  :chuckle:

You'll do fine. Chances are you have all the required materials already anyhow, except maybe the rubber legs. Be careful though, once you go rubber, you never go back....

Simplest fly to tie.
Cost me a ton of pheasant feathers.

I remember seeing Teeny at the Sportsman's show... started tying a lite brown number similar, mountain trout seem to love it!

Thanks for the post! Hope to get my kids to fish out of their packs someday! (Hope to do more myself too!) Some of my best memories! Thanks for the reminder!
