Anyone using .50/.458 sabots?
« on: July 09, 2019, 02:28:23 PM »
I picked up one of the older stainless Winchester x-150s for a good price ($100) so now it's time to start playing around with it.

The first lesson I learned is that T-7 pellets won't ignite with the musket cap nipple that's on there. The guy I got it from gave me a box of the pellets with the rifle and they worked on the first shot but never again. I didn't really expect them to work, but I had to try! I grabbed some loose powder to try next time out.

I have a good collection of different .452 bullets sitting around from past projects with various handguns (454s and 460s) so that should keep me busy for while. I found the .50 sabots designed for .458 rifle bullets though and those sound more interesting. I'm a heavy bullet guy, so I like the idea of trying 350-400gr bullets designed for the 45-70. I don't know anyone who's used the .50/.458 sabots though so I'm not sure if they're worth trying. I figure if they offered an advantage the more folks would be using them.

I have sent samples of both Speer and Hornady .458 in 350 grain to a guy on another forum for his penetration testing, both did fine and should be able to shoot through an elk no problem.
Worth a try.

@Sabotloader is on here and seems to have tried everything under the sun for combinations.  It will be interesting to hear his thoughts on it.
Pain is temporary, achieving the goal is worth it.

I didn't say it would be easy, I said it would be worth it.

Just thought I would drop this in... I shoot the Orange MMP .457-.458 sabot with 458 bullets a LOT.  The 458's are designed for a 45-70 a real rifle versus a lot of the other bullets designed for pistols.

Sabot with a 458x300 Lehigh/Knight Bloodline Bullet

These sabots and the available 458 bullets are normally very accurate for me.

Keep shooting muzzleloaders - They are a blast!!
