Calling Deer on POW
« on: September 13, 2019, 09:54:28 PM »
I am heading to Prince of Wales for a week at the end of October and keep reading articles about deer responding well to predator calls. Does anybody have any idea what calls might work best?  Just a good old screaming rabbit or?  Any advise for the island would be welcome and appreciated.  Thank you

I’ve never been there, but with the bear population there you want to use predator calls to call in deer?🤔🤣

Ive hunted POW the last 3 Novembers. The deer population is down imo. We saw more wolf sign than deer sign. Ive tried calling them in and had a couple does come in, no bucks. What part of the island are you hunting?

You sure they aren't using a doe bleat? Or a grunt tube?

No you re right I've seen them use predator calls on mule deer and it seemed to work.
But as said earlier with a high bear population not sure that type of calling would be smart

That's what I would use.  Any call sounding like a screaming/injured animal will occasionally get them to stand up and look around to see what is going on.

You are correct.  Call the does, the bucks follow...or come in alone.

We have used fawn distress bleats many times all over SE Alaska for blacktails with good success. Occasionally they bring in brown bears.

I just spent a week up at Port Protection fishing three weeks ago.  Port Protection is at the end of POW island.  There are a lot of black bears on the island but the locals told me that POW doesn't have any grizzlies or brown bears on the island.  So worse case scenario would be to call in a black bear.  Not really all that to dangerous I would imagine.  We saw a few black bears on the beaches while we fished and they were scared to death of humans.  I also recall watching a hunting show where they were using preditor calls for black-tails in Alaska also.  Its worth a try!

This is all I have ever seen used in SE AK for Sitka Blacktails. I have personally called does literally right to me, and have know guys to call Bucks during the rut as well. It does not work in heavily hunted areas, nor off rut, and can make them run the other way if used too much. Best of luck those Blacktails are sure fun to hunt!!
