I don’t want to turn this into a Vortex sucks conversation.  I’ve always been a middle of the road budget gear guy. I don’t have a ton of money to spend on Swarovski optics or the like. Mid price range stuff has always been sufficient for me. I got bit by the Vortex bug several years ago. Bought myself a few rifle scopes, a pair of 15x56 Vulture bino’s and a Viper non-HD 20-60x80 spotting scope. Fast forward to 2017 and Rainier10 and I are sitting on the side of a mountain looking at mountain goats. I go to pull my spotter out and it has completely unthreaded itself inside its neoprene sleeve. Not sure what the heck. I get it screwed back together and it seems to work fine, but I emailed Vortex when I got home and they had me send it in for a repair. Got it back a week later better than it was. They fixed whatever they fixed, cleaned and serviced it and purged the air out of it or whatever.  Fast forward again to 2019 opening day of deer season. I pulled my spotter out to find it’s essentially unscrewed itself again inside the neoprene sleeve.



Put it back together and just rolled with my 15’s on the tripod the rest of the weekend. Monday morning I emailed Vortex to ask what I should do. Never got a response. Got a little aggravated.  This morning I get an email from Vortex saying my warranty claim has shipped. Huh?



Then I get a text from my kid when she got home from school saying there’s a big box for me from Vortex Optics on the porch. I got home to find a brand new 20-60x85 Viper HD spotter waiting for me and a prepaid shipping label to send my defective one back to them within 30 days. What the heck? Granted their optics seem to have some issues but I have a hard time complaining when their customer service team goes above and beyond anything I expected to make it right.

What are the odds - I purchased the exact same spotting scope 4 years ago for use on a window mount, never leaves the truck as I have a Swarovski that I use the most. This scope has always been in my truck in the neoprene. It did the exact same thing as yours, un-threaded itself. Which is amazing to me how it can un-thread itself in the neoprene just sitting on my rear seat. I sent it back and they warrantied it and fixed it, no questions asked. Hopefully it doesn't happen again like yours but sounds like they will take care of it if it does.

It’s really weird. You have to wrestle with the sleeve to get it off and on. How the heck it comes unscrewed I’ll never know. I wonder if the threads are  somewhat stripped.

Ya it is very strange. I tried to figure out how it can come unscrewed when it is in that neoprene sleeve that goes on so tight, just doesn't seem possible especially when it just sits on my rear seat and doesn't get abused. It does have plastic threads if I remember right.

Hopefully this time it holds up but Vortex certainly took care of it quickly but they never gave me an answer to why or how this happened.

I've had the same great experience with Vortex customer service when a binocular lense went blurry..... not sure why it happened, Vortex never asked, they just sent me a new pair of bino's. Glad you had a good experience with them.

It's great they have the service they do.....if not they would be out of business due to the lack of Quality control.  I hear stories like this all the time....and because their customer service is sooooo good people keep buying their product.  If I got to my hunting grounds and my spotting scope had come apart, I would be pissed.  Imagine if it were your scope....your hunt is now done until you can get it fixed or get a back up rifle. 

Glad they sent you a new one and hope you got the unicorn in their product line.....so maybe it will last a lifetime like it should.  With that said, you can buy quality stuff on a budget is you look for good used gear.  I run Swaro Bino's and spotter and am in them less than $1100 for the both.   :tup:

Ya...I don't disagree that there definitely seems to be some quality issues. I didn't spend half of the national debt on my optics though either. I'm just happy to report they handled it the way they did. 
With that said, I have heard of at least 2 people I know have to use the warranty on their Swarovski glass and I've personally sent a Leupold rifle scope back that failed.

I'd like to know your supplier for Swaro bino's and a spotter for $1100.00.

It's always great knowing you can get new stuff. Others have said if it weren't for their warranty they'd be out of business and I totally agree. Both of my binos went back again this year to fix stuff and the work binos went back.

I somehow absolutely destroyed the scope I bought off you Josh and sent it back and they gave me an upgrade.

Now I've finally had a reason to send my Leupold binos back and they got messed up when we rolled my buddies UTV elk hunting this year. They seem to hold up more than the vortex though.

I bought them used off a friends dad.  Bought an older pair of SLC's and Swaro range finder for $800.  Traded the Range finder for a $1000 shotgun (new price, it was used but in great condition) so Figure I am in the Bino's for almost nothing.  The spotting scope I bought off a member on her for $1100 I think.  Point is, there are plenty of good used optics out there if a person looks. 

I understand all optics (items) manufacturers will have lemons (if you will) that need attention.  It just seems as if Vortex it is the rule rather than the exception.  I totally get buying mid range gear and did it for many years and occasionally still do.  With that said, I just can't believe how many bad stories you hear about vortex just coming apart and people are still content with the product because the warranty. 

bushnell makes some fantastic glass for 200-400 range and I would buy that before I bought a vortex......matter of fact I own a couple nicer bushnell and really like them and they are crazy durable.  Nikon are in the same boat as I have owned them before without them just falling apart.

Same happened to me. My binos pooped out on me. Called them up and they said send them back for repair.
Mailed them in and in a few days got a brand new set, no questions asked. Great service.

I had dropped my vortex pro gt tripod in my garage the day before rifle season started.  The quick release lockdown lever broke off.  I called vortex and they expedited the pieces I needed. Fast forward to yesterday and I noticed my whole pan head is loose and sloppy after everything is tightened down.   I wrote an email this morning and got a response shortly after that they are sending me a brand new one  with a return shipping Label  to send mine back. And they are overnighting it to me. All I can say is wow. Their customer service is bar none.

Nonsense Bob.....  their warranty is second to none!!  Just read the testimonials, everyone that buys their optics gets great customer service when their items fall apart. Clearly you are a glass half empty kind of person!!!

I own 3 different pairs of vortex binos (razor, talon, viper) and a diamondback spotting scope. All work great and have not failed. I have used the warranty on several of them due to things ive done, mainly scratching the glass. Quality is great, customer service is excellent.

Everything man made can and will fail. I take comfort in knowing that even if I damage it, they will fix it.

50% of the vortex I have owned had major malfunctions.  I returned and sold all 4 items.   Otherwise it appears based on all the threads you read on this topic....approx half the people who comment have had problems.  The op started this thread has had two known problems / major malfunctions with one item.   That is a 66% fail rate. 

I could care less what people want to spend their money on.....it just amazes me how many people buy these defective items and still love the company because of their customer service.....which is hands down good (no argument there).

50% of the vortex I have owned had major malfunctions.  I returned and sold all 4 items.   Otherwise it appears based on all the threads you read on this topic....approx half the people who comment have had problems.  The op started this thread has had two known problems / major malfunctions with one item.   That is a 66% fail rate. 

I could care less what people want to spend their money on.....it just amazes me how many people buy these defective items and still love the company because of their customer service.....which is hands down good (no argument there).

So 50% of your experience + a few people who responded here. If 66% of their optics truly did fail and had to be returned they would be out of business. Maybe you have just had bad luck. Ive purchased 4 optics, 4 or so red dot sights, and 4 or so scopes and have not had a failure. My success rate is 100%. Several people I hunt and work with also use vortex bino's, scopes, spotting scopes, red dots, and range finders. Havent seen any failures there either, this includes red dots on duty guns, which is hard on the optic.

For the price they charge compaired to the price of production in China they could give away 10 pairs and still turn a profit.

50% of the vortex I have owned had major malfunctions.  I returned and sold all 4 items.   Otherwise it appears based on all the threads you read on this topic....approx half the people who comment have had problems.  The op started this thread has had two known problems / major malfunctions with one item.   That is a 66% fail rate.

No....  I stated the op had a 66% fail rate on one item!!  At the end of the day you no my opinion.  If yours is different, well good on you.  Like I also said....you can spend your money any way you see fit. I choose not to buy products with that high a fail rate.  This was spurred by an admin / mod calling people “arogant” for having “hoity tooth” optics.   All my optics at budget optics as I have purchased them used for killer deals.  Im not arrogant about it...just have my opinions.   You have a right to yours too without me calling names so have at it....

I’ve had Razor HD binos, Razor HD spotter, Viper HD binos, and even a viper rifle scope (plinker, not a hunting rifle). Have never had an issue with any of them and I’ve felt they have been great quality for mid range optics, but the stories I’ve heard from hunting buddies and in general keep “failure” in the back of my mind at any minute. The vortex customer service has always sounded to be bar none compared to other experiences I’ve had.... had a Bushnell riflescope break during an elk season with no hope of replacement before the season end, had Nikon monarch binos that broke a week before the season and was left with nothing because they were unable to replace in time. I’ve also had several other “cheaper optics” fail... riflescopes, spotting scopes, and binos (including a few maybe not so cheap). Personally, I choose to use something that I am confident is less likely to fail if it comes down to filling a tag or not. My hunting rifles carry mostly Leupold or Swarovski.

That being said, I haven’t been fortunate enough to draw any OIL tags, or a tag that relies heavily on “glassing” to be successful. If I did, I might be dropping some additional cash on optics....

I don’t want to turn this into a Vortex sucks conversation.  I’ve always been a middle of the road budget gear guy. I don’t have a ton of money to spend on Swarovski optics or the like. Mid price range stuff has always been sufficient for me. I got bit by the Vortex bug several years ago. Bought myself a few rifle scopes, a pair of 15x56 Vulture bino’s and a Viper non-HD 20-60x80 spotting scope. Fast forward to 2017 and Rainier10 and I are sitting on the side of a mountain looking at mountain goats. I go to pull my spotter out and it has completely unthreaded itself inside its neoprene sleeve. Not sure what the heck. I get it screwed back together and it seems to work fine, but I emailed Vortex when I got home and they had me send it in for a repair. Got it back a week later better than it was. They fixed whatever they fixed, cleaned and serviced it and purged the air out of it or whatever.  Fast forward again to 2019 opening day of deer season. I pulled my spotter out to find it’s essentially unscrewed itself again inside the neoprene sleeve.



Put it back together and just rolled with my 15’s on the tripod the rest of the weekend. Monday morning I emailed Vortex to ask what I should do. Never got a response. Got a little aggravated.  This morning I get an email from Vortex saying my warranty claim has shipped. Huh?



Then I get a text from my kid when she got home from school saying there’s a big box for me from Vortex Optics on the porch. I got home to find a brand new 20-60x85 Viper HD spotter waiting for me and a prepaid shipping label to send my defective one back to them within 30 days. What the heck? Granted their optics seem to have some issues but I have a hard time complaining when their customer service team goes above and beyond anything I expected to make it right.



So thanks, Vortex. I appreciate your stand up customer service.

No. Would you?
I’m not defensive. I’m 100% comfortable with my purchases, the price point and where I’m at with those purchases. Nothing to be defensive about. Nothing you will say will change my mind. I won’t spend that kind of money on Swaro or the like optics. Won’t happen. I’m ok with that. I’ve got better things to spend the money on that I also work my ass off to earn.
Did you buy your Vortex optics knowing they would fail?
It seems like 50% of the returns I’ve seen people send back to Vortex are because someone ran them over or dropped them off a roof or left them on their back bumper as they drive away or they got eaten by a grizzly bear then spit out. I don’t consider those issues quality issues either. I consider those situations to be abuse and I wouldn’t expect them to be covered under warranty. But they are.

I have a crossfire II scope on my .300 win mag. For the money the glass is very good. I’ve fallen on a steep hill & slid 100 feet down with that and it didn’t break. It rides around in the back of the pickup. It’s gotten knocked around riding on atvs. It been out in the nastiest weather. It’s been through all of that without breaking. They make a good product.

I have purchased 2 different Vortex rifle scopes, 1 of them I could not turn the power adj. ring...brand new WTF, the other was out of focus and was told it was defective, sent both back, I will never try another Vortex optic. I purchased a used Swarovski spotter and used EL 10X42 bino's from a friend, had the bino's for 5 years and sold them for $100. 00 more than I paid for them, purchased used 10x42 EL Range bino's, sent spotter and bino's to Swaro 2 years ago  for cleaning and new rubber eye cups, they sent them back to me 2 weeks later and looked like new...only cost to me was shipping 1 way. I am sure I will have my Swaro's until I stop hunting and then my son will get many years of use...

In all seriousness though you guys must be right... I have a pair of vortex binos I found on the hillside (obviously someone so disguised by vortex quality they threw them on the ground) I have used and abused them and they have performed perfectly for me Other then one broken eye relief screw/stud that may have happened when said previous owner threw them on the ground and stomped off or may very well be what prompted them the discard them on the ground in the first place...

I’ll try and remember to send them back to vortex in the off-season next year for repair unless they dissenegrate in my hands before then!

I have three of their Razor scopes and have never sent any of them back, but I've never sent any of my Viper scopes back either. I have sent one of my Leupolds back and had a good experience with their customer service.

I had to send my spotter in to get repaired it's a Razor. I also have a pair of viper binoculars that I thoroughly abuse and a viper rifle scope on one of my .300 win mags never had a problem with either of them.

Me and my kids have:
4 pair of Diamondback binocs.   Average about 5 years old.
2 Diamondback rifle scopes.
1 Diamondback spotting scope.

Only issue has been that we've lost a couple objective lens covers (my personal Vortek pet peeve right there!!).

But we did have a Nikon rifle scope fog up this year.
Wish their warrantee was like Vortek's.

I'm sure my Vortek's don't compare to glass in higher price ranges, but within their price range, they work for me.

I'm in the boat of no issues with their gear and all my interactions with their CS has been great.

I have
1pr of Diamondback binos
2 Diamonback scopes
1 Viper scope

Several of my hunting partners also have spotters and scopes. No issues amongst the crowd and fortunately if there was they'd back us up.

I did just have to send in a Bushnell scope for warranty recently and aside from their lead time of several weeks (fogged up after high hunt) and still waiting for replacement to show up, they too seem to be taking care of the customer with replacement.
