Used Decoys
« on: October 23, 2019, 12:03:30 PM »
Hello, me again with another newbie question. I got out my 30 year old used (but not by me) mallard decoys that I was planning on using and discovered that three of the decoys have chewed off beaks (from puppies) two have chewed tails, and three have cracks and ship water. I'm left with about five well used and faded dekes that are usable. I need to get some dekes, but I'm on a budget, so I found these - 19 dekes plus mesh carry bag for $35. Do you think this is worth it?

That's a fair price. I don't like to pay more than a buck or two for old used decoys like that.

Let me look around and I'll see what I have. I'm up near Everett.

I think that’s a decent price to pay for decoys. Can always clean them up and touch them up a bit. They look fine to me

It's an OK price.  I have found that used decoys in WA seem to command nearly the same price as new ones.  If you aren't in a hurry, you will be able to pick up a dozen new mallards for $35 on sale at some point on or before Black Friday at least.  If you are really on a budget, figure out how to combine sales and coupons or codes.

Cabelas has a dozen for $45 full retail.  They will be on sale at some point or you will get a coupon in the mail.

If they have cords and weights, it's a good deal, but if not I would probably just buy a box of cheapos.  I often grab a dozen on sale just to replace the ones my son shoots or float down the river during the year - ok, maybe it isn't him that shoots them or sets them in bad spots...

Dicks, Cabelas, Rogers, they will all run some sort of cheapo mallard sale at some point.

**Edit**

Just saw they came with a bag.  If they have weights and a bag, that's a pretty good deal.  Touch them up or clean them up, especially the white parts if you go that route.

Those decoys are junk. Maybe a dollar each. You get to Yakima and I"ll give you a dozen of my old flambeaus we call clowns.

$2 per decoy or less is a good deal.  That’s what I typically will sell mine for.
Cut em!
It's not the shells!  It's the shooter!

Thanks again for your advice and suggestions. Badhabit, thanks for your kind offer, but I can rarely get to the Yakima area. Nice of you, though.

I’ll be in Ballard all next week and can bring you 60-70 older decoys with bags to get you going for free if you want man!

Skeeter99, I dont think I can turn down this kind offer, thank you very much. I'm sort of at a loss for words for your generosity. I'm a huge believer in paying it forward, so maybe I can help another new duck hunter out in the future. Thanks again. I'm in North Seattle so I'm close to ballard.

Caulk the holes, ducks don't care if a beak or tail of a decoy are short....
