Retractable tonneau cover suggestions

I broke down and bought a new truck and I'm wanting to put one of those retractable/rolls up tonneau covers, the kind that rolls into a can, on it but I know very little about which one or who makes one better than another.  I had a canopy on my Tacoma but I don't want a shell on this truck so I'm wanting to go with one of those retractable type tonneau covers this time.

Anyone have any experience with these things and know the ones to go with versus ones to stay away from?  The pros & cons to these things would be great too.

The ones I've seen take up a lot of bed space which may or may not be a concern. You're going to lose a foot or more of space. We sell a ton of those tri-fold tonneaus and almost none of the retractable ones.

I am no help on the retractable ones.   
I also recently got a new truck two months ago and didn't want a canopy this time.  Most of the roll ups I found were soft and flapped in the wind. Kid at work just got one 2 weeks ago and he hates it
I looked at many tonneau covers and decided on a tri-fold.  I like that I can put suff on top if need be, 400# capacity. Mine only weighs 50# and can easily be removed by one person. Here is mine

I have never had a retractable cover. I have had Bak-Flip G2's on my last two trucks, they are great. I use it as a step ladder all the time.

I bought mine off Amazon, had it in two days and installed in about 40 minutes.

Great, more options to consider now.  I'm not all that concerned about losing the space in the bed and I haven't really considered the folding type, but I do like that they cost a fair bit less and are easy to remove.

Is there any ability to lock the folding type?  Not that I'd ever put anything of great value you in there and leave it, but it'd be nice to be able to lock it to some degree.

I have the tri-fold one on my Tacoma. When fully open, it takes up 1/3 of the bed. I like it though. It's convenient.

I have a Roll N Lock on current pickup. Pretty sure I’ll have one on every pickup going forward.

Pretty nice to keep anything in the bed dry and secure when needed, yet within seconds it’s like it’s not even there. Yes you loose a little bed space with it but hasn’t been a problem

In these smaller bedded trucks it seems like you need all the space available and killing 1/4 of the space did not suit me. I ended up going with an Extang that opens front or back and removes in about a minute. It has been great and my only complaint is that it was not designed to support weight, though it is pretty rigid and it has supported my #240 a couple times. I like that you can fold up the panel closest to the cab to put stuff without dropping the tailgate.

They all do unless they're cheap and easy to steal.

take a look at access covers,roll-up and take up very little room.have had them on my last 2 trucks and really like them

The Extang has an installation similar to a canopy, no permanent holes in the truck. For that, it is as secure as any, none of the folding or rolling are real secure. My wife actually installed ours while I was away.

I have a Tri-fold on my Tundra and it only takes up a few inches in the front above the bed rails when folded up all the way. It blocks the rear window but has no wasted bed space. I really like it. It is pretty darn secure if I lock the tailgate and it keeps the rain off anything in the bed.

The folding one has merit but I think I'm still definitely leaning toward the retractable.  There's just so dam many different ones available how the he11 do you know which one/s are better than the other.   Some of them I looked at today said they weren't available for my vehicle.  That'll be my luck, I'll get it narrowed down to the one I think I want and I'll find out they don't make it for my model truck.

Our accessory guide calls for 1 hour labor to install any of the roll up or tri fold tonneau covers we sell. Can't be too complicated. I give them all to the same guy to install so he's gotten pretty good.

The Bak-flip G2, all three sections fol up so the whole bed is accessible. I haul rock, gravel and mulch all the time. Just fold it up and go.
