Cummins electric fan clutch
« on: February 22, 2020, 07:00:04 AM »
For those of you that have replaced your fan clutch in a 3rd gen Cummins, what brand have you used and have you had good luck with it? My 04 needed the bearing for the fan hub so while I’m in there I’m doing anything I can to not have to go back in again. Dodge ones are $450, napa is $250. Typically I’d go with dodge but want to hear everyone’s experience.

🤔

Isn’t the bearing and fan clutch all one unit?

I haven't had to deal with this issue but I will say I would likely use oem as NAPA isn't as quality as it used to be imop.  Maybe look at your water pump while tore down?   I think I would cruise the cummins forums for some info on this.  Often ya can find good tips or not to do tip lol.

Don't know about the third gens,i have second gens, but if you have never removed one Its easiest if you smack the end of the wrench straight down. Then they hand spin off. I think there are some you tube videos on it.

I put a fan clutch from NAPA on my 04 about 3 yrs ago and it is still working fine.
It never changes, but it is always different.

Does the radiator come out for that?

Yep radiator comes out, least I did it that way. Fan hub has its own bearing, in a mount that the fan clutch screws onto. I have it all apart, just deciding on what to do with the clutch...

Well....LOL....it certainly would have been a lot easier to take the radiator out, but I did not.  I think I did everything from the bottom side.
I did take a 1 7/16 Proto end wrench and make the open end a little thinner on a mill so it would fit in there to get the nut...added leverage.
It never changes, but it is always different.

Haha it is way easier. I contemplated putting it all back together with the new hub Bearing and doing the fan clutch later, cause a guy can take the 4 nuts for the fan shroud out, then the shroud and fan together, but I’ve been in wrenching mode lately and the weather was good yesterday so I decided to tear it all down and make it easy.
