Did anyone listen to the joe Rogan podcast with Doug Duran about CWD? How long until we have CWD in Washington?

I’ve been using deer pee lure for blacktail hunting with a lot of success for several years. I am probably going to stop using urine lure after learning it could possibly contribute to the spread of CWD. Small sacrifice on my end to help slow the potential spread.

It's only a matter of time until it is in WA.  It will spread naturally and through people that don't know the transport laws or don't care.  The only way to stop it is to cull the deer in a buffer zone as the prions will last forever and can't be killed because they aren't alive to begin with.

@Sundance , there are some pretty good synthetics out there. I dont know about their effectiveness for blacktail but for whitetail I use almost exclusively synthetic scents.

I imagine there is a lot of wanton disregard and ignorance for the CWD inspired transport laws. For CWD to win, it only has to get in the population once.

Oregon made natural pee lure illegal this year.   So I tossed my supply since I spend so much time hunting there also.

I will have to look into it. I was using Tinks hotshot blacktail doe in heat which I believe they discontinued anyway. Stuff was amazing but if there is a good synthetic out there I'm willing to give it a try.

Though it is a good idea to help keep it from spreading, it has not been the doom and gloom of wiping out entire herds in the Midwest like it was predicted to be. I'm not sure of its effect on Blacktails though.

My parents lived next to a CWD eradication zone in WI and there are still lots of deer twenty years later.

I am much more worried about the potential jump to humans than the impacts to deer herds, but of course neither are good.

The more deer that have it and the more interactions with humans just increases the probability of a mad deer disease event.

Yeah, the disease experts have gradually changed from "there is no indication of risk to humans" to "other similar diseases have made the jump to humans" and now most suggest not eating CWD meat.

In my mind, safety for people is clear #1, followed by not being able to eat the deer I kill.  I now test 100% and won't eat anything that tests positive or inconclusive.  That's pretty much the equivalent of not being able to hunt at all if I can't eat it.

I think the real issue is can it jump to the human population by consumption, and if so how long. It's very close to "Mad Cow".  Remember that A human version of mad cow disease called variant Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (vCJD) and is believed to be caused by eating beef products contaminated with central nervous system tissue, such as brain and spinal cord, from cattle infected with mad cow disease.  We're all careful about cutting out meat, but what about those spin or head shots? Does the gray matter contaminate the meat?
