Need brake help
« on: June 20, 2020, 09:20:24 AM »
I've got an issue with my 02 Dakota that I can't figure out and hope someone here can help me out. A couple years ago I put new drums and shoes on the rear and rotors and pads on the front, the truck was due and the rear had a little bounce to it which I attributed to a bad drum so I replaced everything. After the brake job the brakes worked great but the little bounce didn't go away. I learned to deal with it until recently when it seems like the bounce is getting a little more noticeable and I've had enough, I need it fixed. This morning I inspected both rear brake assemblies hoping to see something obvious, I saw nothing, shoes and drums look fine, don't know where to look next.
Any thoughts/suggestions are greatly appreciated.

Going to need more description of the little bounce.
Is it right at the end of your stop? one bounce or repeated?

Repeated, speed doesn't seem to matter, although more noticeable getting off the freeway.

Did you bleed them when you replaced the parts? Might have some air in the line.

Get up To freeway speeds. lightly apply the E-brake see if you feel it. If you do You have a warped brake drum. Easy fix to have it machined true again. If You don't feel it with the e-brake applied then You might have a warped rotor.
I have had many warped rotors and or Drums right out of the box. What brand parts?

Air in the brake system will not cause a bounce in the brakes. unless his bounce is a low brake pedal

O'reilly, which was probably my first mistake, wife was a student at the UW at the time, funds were tight.

Could be anything from a bad tire, lost wheel weight, mud, wheel bearings, driveline going out, carrier bearing, transmission output shaft bearing, blown shocks on wavy pavement

I would rotate the rear tire to the front, see if your bounce moves

While tires are still on but in the air, check wheel bearings

Inspect drive shaft, wiggle the u joints

Wiggle the output shaft on your trans

Start with the easy things that don't cost anything

I had a bounce like you described, took wheels off and power washed inside the wheel getting the dirt out, bounce gone

Or You can take it to a Mechanic like Myself. They will charge You an hour ($100+) to tell You what's wrong. Then do the repairs Yourself.

And yes O'reilly is a bottom option for parts quality.

Are you talking about a pulsation when you apply the brakes?

Vibration while driving?

What do you mean by “bounce?”

" In today's instant gratification society, more and more pressure revolves around success and the measurement of one's prowess as a hunter by inches on a score chart or field photos produced on social media. Don't fall into the trap. Hunting is-and always will be- about the hunt, the adventure, the views, and time spent with close friends and family. " Ryan Hatfield

Pulsating is probably a better description, I just said bounce because my kid asked me once why the truck always bounces when we slow down.

I got my money on it being a high quality china brake drum or both. Get the rear drums machined and Your problem should be solved.
