Idaho deer

Hello everyone,

Have an out of state trip  to Idaho planned for deer,, what are the requirements for bringing back a deer? Do I need to take it to be processed (I believe we will be near challis or can take it to Boise?) before coming across state lines or can I drive it back and have it processed by my local guy?

Make sure you leave evidence of sex on we got harassed at GameStop north of mountain home a couple years ago ours were completely boned out in packages ready for the freezer and they still said we had to have evidence of sex attached. I’d still don’t leave it attached but  we bring them home in Ziploc bags and throw them away when we get home

so If they want evidence attached that means I can bring the whole carcass home to my butcher? Here in wa I usually just skin it and leave a small piece of meat attached at the neck and saw through at the butcher. If I have to bone it out and package, it wouldn’t be possible to leave evidence of sex attached?

It's pretty easy to leave it naturally attached to the biggest piece of meat, even boned out.  The biggest trouble is remembering to do it! Just put that piece in it's own bag so that it doesn't contaminate your clean meat.  When you get home and process it, ditch the evidence, pick any hair, and you're good to go.

Our game regs have a list of states that you cannot bring bone in meat home from. If memory serves correctly, Idaho is not on that list yet. So you should be good to transport carcass whole to your local butcher. I’ll check when I have a min and verify, don’t want to put bad info out.

I checked. Not on the list. Should be good to bring home whole if you choose. Page 67 of the regs. Top right. Has all the states and provinces you cannot bring bone in meat from.

What is your plan to transfer an entire deer home to W WA and keep it cool?  Just curious.

Ice then wrapped. Can usually keep it pretty insulated. If it’s too hot then hack it up and throw it in coolers will have to do. Unless the butcher has a quick turn around in challis. Any suggestions?

Yep, bone that critter out and put the meat bags in a large cooler with some block ice and you're golden.

I couldnt imagine bringing a whole deer carcass back home from another state. Bone it out and haul less back

I just did this last week.  Boned it out and in a cooler with dry ice. 90 plus degrees most of the way. It was frozen solid when I got home 10 hours later.
