Caught this big guy sneaking in on me a few weeks ago during archery elk season.
I was sitting in my tree stand and started cow calling right at first light trying to attract one of the several bulls I’d been seeing in the area. After about 20mins of calling off and on I caught movement about 75-80yds out off to my right. At first I thought it was a deer but quickly realized it was a cougar. He was just sitting there looking around for the cow elk I assume.
After a couple minutes he started coming in straight to my stand. When he completely disappeared behind a couple of trees I quickly reached up and grabbed my bow off the hanger. I had ranged several shooting lanes earlier and he was headed straight to one of the 20yd locations. As he got about 30yds out he turned and started quartering away from me and was headed to a small rock outcropping. I had ranged the spot in front of the rock earlier at 30yds. As he went behind a tree I drew back and settled my 40yd pin on him as he was walking out onto the rock. I lip squeaked to get him to stop and released the arrow immediately afterwards. I couldn’t have been a more perfect shot, the arrow caught him right behind the ribs and exited out the inside of the opposite shoulder. Nicked both lungs and took out the top of his heart. He jumped straight up, spun around and was dead within seconds. I expected to see him take off but quickly realized he was laying behind some branches. He only went about 8ft from where the arrow went through him.
Took him to a buddy’s house that has a meat locker and scale and he weighed in at 148lbs.
