Hey Jed, thar's a moos rot thar!

Idaho F&G is deploying life like moose decoys this year to put the nab on law breakers.  Obviously, be cognizant of legal shooting hours, don't shoot from the road, and oh yah..... have a valid moose tag  :o

Well that puts a crimp in all the advice that's always seemed to be given on the topic of moose hunting. Aka shoot the moose that's in the rd. Or as close to the rd as possible.

Hopefully the residents of Idaho can see how well their tax dollars are spent or not. That had to cost a bundle just to catch some guy shooting from the road.

Cool thing is those animals take a beating and keep on ticking. So shooting from a road, closed season's,closed area's, no tag...that moose will pay for itself in a hurry.

I remember helping wdfw with decoy operations year's ago.. mostly at night. Pretty fun stuff. Funny thing is those decoys only catch people breaking the law.

Good. Get people breaking the law out of the woods I’ll always back that.. one time driving out of a popular blacktail area i saw a very nice buck.. pulled over to take a closer look at him and sure enough it was a fake deer. (After shooting hours)

So if you shoot the fake moose can you be charged with illegally taking a moose(doubtful) or just shooting from the road or shooting after hours? Do they get the big fines or just the parking tickets?

I always thought it would be great if they packed a few with Tannerite  :chuckle:
To hunt and butcher an animal is to recognize that meat is not some abstract form of protein that springs into existence tightly wrapped in cellophane and styrofoam.

I would say NO you can't. If you got out of the truck and off the road and shot the decoy, I would think they couldn't ticket you for anything. Nothing in the regs saying it is illegal to shoot a decoy :chuckle: Good looking decoy though

It's a big boy ticket. It has to do with intent.

The robo buck was in the sinlahkein quite a few years back during the archery season and unfortunately for a young kid who’s dad thought it would be a great idea for the youngster to arrow the buck! We had drove past the buck minutes before this event happened and all got a good laugh at robo buck. Felt bad for the kiddo though

I'll go out on the limb and guess that most guys they roll up aren't first offenders.

In MT, it's actually illegal to shoot the decoy plus whatever else they ticket at the same time.

Quote
Simulated Wildlife (MCA 87-6-217)
It is unlawful to discharge a firearm or other
hunting implement at a simulated wildlife
decoy in violation of any state statute,
ARM, or F&W Commission rule regulating
the hunting of the wildlife being simulated.
