When i was 16 if i saw a spike i would have shot it... But when i was 16 there wasn't 5000 people puting in for these hunts.
If i drew that tag with my son i would let him decide what kind of trophy he wanted to shoot. Then he could kick his own ass when he got older for shooting that spike or fork...

Like I said, I'm totally cool with him shooting it... would you guys rather him shoot a 3 1/2 year old 3 point that will grow up to be a monster or a spike? Heck he got some meat and there's one more big buck up there for the trophy hunters...

As much as we all would like this to be a trophy hunt it dosen't work that way.. the same guy with this tag that kill 2 points every year is looking at this tag as an extension of the season.
For me this is the opportunity of a lifetime. Won't be shooting anything small.

Chuck how you doin man? Went up today again and saw some decent bucks... a few I think ur son would be happy shooting, especially if he's down with a 26" two point with eyeguards! haha jk
I'll be up there again in the morning so if you want, give me a call on my cell when you hit town... BTW, that camp was still open today...

Do you have a tag Michael J?
Personally, if it were my kid...I would of used it as an opportunity to teach him about hunting, not necessarily trophy hunting, but definitely would of DISCOURAGED him to not shoot that buck and see what's possible. It was not an issue of whether or not he was going to kill a deer...it was when and how big. I would like to see the kid enjoy the hunt and learn about patience...maybe some perserverance. If he's going to kill a spike with that tag...take him to Spokane and shoot a whitetail. I think most people have had experiences where their best hunts were not necessarily kill hunts.

Id take a belt to that kids ass
One liners are always the funniest, couldn't stop laughing about this one!
Had the tag in 2003, saw one buck over 190"...too far to shoot
, killed the second biggest buck I saw 165". Had a great hunt. Had 3 more days to hunt and it poured rain and fog....had some good karma I guess.

It is too easy for everyone to sit back and arm chair QB these special hunts. When it comes down to the final say, it is up to the individual. For people to come on here second guess other hunters decisions is weak. You will get drawn in time and then you can back up your BS.

It is just different for everyone. And, it changes as your "career" goes on. Personally, I am Trophy hunting with my LE Chiwawa tag but I don't mind what anyone else wants to do with there tag as long as they enjoy the hunt and behave in good character while they are out there. Wish us luck, my group has 4 LE tags this year. One Chiwawa, 2 Entiat, and one LT murry. Looks like it is going to start snowing up high. Ya-whoooo! Lets have some fun.....

crazy stuff, i knew a guy back a few years ago, when the permit numbers were like 15 or 20 i think, in the entiat and him and his dad on the first day shot little forky horns standing off the side of the road. they were the two happiest people but, man, i sure couldnt have been happy.
And having had a late tag, and my dad having a late tag, and also the wa raffle tag. WE have experience all the ups and downs, and the backing up of the BS. Its a crazy place to be in. you all your buddies and people giving you *censored* before the hunt and during it, so you put all this pressure on your self, maybe or maybe not. And then there is also the people that talk a lot of BS about how good they are, and all this crap and then cant back it up. All i know is with our 3 LE tags, we have taken a bucks that offically score 188, 190 and 204 1/2 inches.
But you have to go in saying a big one or nothing. Or am i going to shoot something that i like that might not be the biggest, or the highest scoring. its all up to the hunter, that kid probably should have held off, or been maybe told to hold off but then again, he probably was sooooo excited that, that is all that matters, he got himself a buck and he is happy.
So just dont overdo it, stress your self out. Its an amazing thing to have one of these in your pockets. and just enjoy it, because you are going to have to wait a few years to experience it again!!
Good luck guys, have fun be safe.

Four more hours then we can finally go. Set up camp today and saw one semi-decent md wt 26"wx18t 4pt. His fronts were smoking with probably a 10"+ deep fork, but his backs were shorter and crab claw. Not a shooter but nice to look at. I would guess 3.5 maybe 4.5 years old will be a shooter next year if his backs come close to his fronts. Better go toss and turn for a few hours.

FYI-
I've had a late tag, I know how great an experience it was compared to most hunts in this state, I know the potential, even if a guy wasnt a trophy hunter, if it was my kid who drew the tag I would encourage him to hold out a little, just to experience a great hunt with very little other pressure for a few days, not necessarily to shoot the biggest buck out there. any first buck is going to be a treasured trophy in anyones book.

After seeing what I've seen the last couple days, I'm ecstatic that Dad tagged what he did, even if it was early. None bigger so far in the unit. One close. Another guy tagged out on a much smaller deer yesterday and he was happy. He drove right by a nice one though.
