Need help identifying this mushroom
« on: January 15, 2021, 12:52:15 PM »

Okay folks I Need help identifying this mushroom.  I know its a polypore but what kind is it and is it good for anything?

It is growing on my neighbors "Blue Spruce" stump.
Pic #1 shows the stump it is growing on
Pic #2 close up of the polypore
Pic #3 the underside of the Polypore

I almost sure its not a turkey tail, it looks like it is burnt on top but that's the color and texture.
Any help is appreciated.
JC

Hey Trapper John- that sure looks like Dyer's polypore, Phaeolus schweinitzii. It is a common root and lower stem rot of older conifers. It is one of the major causes of death for old Douglas-fir trees in our Northwestern forests.

Ah, I didn't answer the whole question. Folks into natural fabrics use it for dyeing wool a variety of earth tones.

Thanks I'm always learning
I know some polypores you can dry and make tea out of them.  Turkey Tail comes to mine.
Thanks again

I agree on the Dyer's. Use it to dye wool or cotton; not sure about synthetics. Don't eat it or make tea with it. It's said to be poisonous.
