Good question-  for me, it is just quicker to get the whole thing on my back and get it to the truck, if it is less than a mile or so, which is typical here in the Palouse. I also like to hang my deer whole for the aging period.  I prefer to skin the animal while it is hanging as well.

 If it were more of a backcountry hunt, of course I'd quarter or bone out the meat!

Appreciate the feedback and sorry to derail the thread. Was just curious since I am sure some do it for the "cool" factor, pictures and so they can say their pack was "x" weight

I suppose the pictures can look "epic", etc., but not the reason I do it!  And I have used all the different methods multiple times, so I guess that I've settled on the "whole pack-out" method as relatively efficient for "front-country" hunts. There have been a few bucks, like my 2018 Idaho whitetail, which were large enough where I skinned out the hindquarters, packed out the back half, and then returned for the front half of the deer.

Similar for me.  If it is a reasonable sized animal and I am only a mile out or less i will just gut it and haul it to the truck where i can get it hung and skinned easier and in a cleaner environment.

Has nothing to do with wanting a photo op!

That pic is crazy !  Why?  - cape way to short for a mount so why all the neck ?  What were you drinking thinking?

On the deer, sometimes pics can be deceiving. Guessing I would say pack weight 30 lbs.

The hind quarters were 185lbs a piece. I felt bad for that mule that hauled them out

Half of a boned out mature buck (meaning 4-6 years old) in October will be 55-60 lbs, spotting scope tripod 7, rifle 11, deer head 6-8 lbs.
