Ford cuts F-150 production, semiconductor shortages

DETROIT — Ford Motor is significantly cutting production of its highly profitable F-150 pickup trucks due to an ongoing semiconductor chip shortage plaguing the global automotive industry.

The automaker said Thursday that its Dearborn Truck Plant in Michigan will drop to one shift from three for a week beginning Monday, while truck production at its Kansas City Assembly Plant in Missouri will drop to two shifts from three. Ford spokeswoman Kelli Felker said both plants are expected to return to three shifts the week of Feb. 15.

Selection might drop but as a result of limited supply I would expect a significant increase in price similar to price gouging of ammo and firearms

..."Despite our mitigation efforts, the semiconductor shortage will impact GM production in 2021. We are currently assessing the overall impact, but our focus is to keep producing our most in-demand products," GM said in a statement.

The company suggested that solving the problem could be tricky.

"Semiconductor supply for the global auto industry remains very fluid," the statement said.

The shortage has led several other automakers to cut production, including Volkswagen, Ford, Subaru, Toyota and Nissan

IHS Markit has predicted that production in the global car sector will be 672,000 vehicles lower than anticipated in the first quarter.

The forecasting firm expects the shortage to last into the third quarter.

It's not only a Ford problem you better hope you don't have a Dodge truck with a transmission problem. My buddy sells Mopar power train. They can't get transmissions because of the same type of processor/chip set shortage that runs the transmission in the new trucks.

We are already there... the shortage of used trucks is insane, go look at Craigslist.... the average 5 year old truck with 80K on it is $45-50K   decided to wait a year to buy...

Parts supply chain is done. I wouldn’t be too far off saying 40-50% of the parts we order are back ordered and we’re busier than ever. It sucks!!

And Fords new parts purchasing rules are making it harder to get parts from distributors like the company I work for. Which is Seattle Automotive Dist.

It's not just Ford, and not just semiconductors.  Many electronic components from resistors up through complete systems are constrained. All industries.  All geographies.  If a product has electronics or a processor or computer in it, that end product company feeling the pain right now.


We've known it's been coming for awhile now.  Many companies moved electronics supply chain out of China now due to tariffs in 2019 and 2020.....and there are capacity shortages for certain electronics components and systems across Vietnam, Malaysia, Phillipines, Korea, Germany, Mexico, you name it.  Everywhere is constrained.   Coupled with rolling shutdowns in various countries during the pandemic further limiting output in 2020, and many companies halting much needed capacity expansion facilities in 2020 to protect cash reserves....to even some factory fires at key facilities around the globe.   Plus companies that saw it coming were over-ordering in 2020 to add extra inventory that started the run, and now everybody is overordering....further exacerbating the problem. 


Electronic components that were 4-6 weeks are now 8-16 weeks lead time.  Things that were 14-16 weeks at a computer assembly level have moved to 7-9 months lead time.  More complex/specialized products that were 6-7 months have moved to 12-18 months lead time.   2020 was the year of COVID, 2021 will be the year of supply shortages.....as electronics are in everything these days.
