Last duck of the season.
« on: February 10, 2021, 06:46:35 PM »
Dry aged him in the fridge since last day of season. Just sliced him up, thickly, and cooked him in oil with just a bit of sea salt and black pepper for seasoning. It was good! Chewed slowly and reflected on my season.....and it was good. Spent many days this season out in the blind with my granddaughters. I spent a lot more time teaching them about duck hunting than duck shooting this season. The toughest bird for them to identify on the wing is a lone pintail hen....me too! My best hunt of the year was one me and my oldest granddaughter never fired a shot. There were hundreds (if not more) buzzing/bombing us. We just sat in the blind and watched. I taught her duck ID and behavior as we deep-fried (and ate) egg rolls and drank homemade chocolate milk (and coffee). I did tend to focus a bit on efficiency this season (when I shot) and finished with 64 ducks out of 102 shells (4 boxes), got 2 headed to the taxidermist (Eurasian wigeon drake and a full plumage Northern Shoveler drake, first duck of the year was banded (mine) and last duck of the year was banded (oldest granddaughter). I feel like a blessed son of a gun this year! Here’s to hoping we all have a great season next year!

Congrats on your season.  Nice write up.  I wish I was running on the efficient side of things this season.  When I used to shoot a Browning BPS pump back in the day, I was pretty efficient.  The boys and I now all shoot autoloaders and I think they are an ammo manufactures dream gun. :chuckle:
Cut em!
It's not the shells!  It's the shooter!

Great write up.  I too have at times gone out and decided to give the ducks a pass.  Just enjoyed the marsh scene.

Good on you for passing it on to your grandkids.
