Homemade sea salt
« on: February 27, 2021, 04:49:04 PM »
Made some homemade sea salt. 2 gallons of Salish Sea (that’s kinda hard to say) water yielded me about 5-6 ounces of salt. Two of these grinders full.

Crazy to me that you get (it looks like) more product than the maple syrup guys are getting! Yes, I know, very different. Still, I am surprised you get that much salt out of it.

Me too! The first 2 gallon batch I did I “cooked” down in a Teflon lined roaster with a faulty rheostat (cooked too hot, too fast). Kinda scorched that batch. I tossed it. This second 2 gallon batch I went with all stainless and glass.

You can 'scorch' salt?!?! Never knew... I may have to try this just for kicks!

Had read that you can scorch it. I dunno! The electric roaster pan had some kind of weird “ring” where the element was that I couldn’t get cleaned....a yellowish band that was hard. I finally tossed it and the salt.

This batch I cut in half and made some “fancy” salt. Wine salt.

Love it! Salt is on my list this summer. I've wanted to try it ever since getting some of Lokidog's.

Forgot to mention that the saltwater was taken away from any surf (too much “trash” in the water). Also it was filtered through a coffee filter before evaporating down.

Thanks for adding that part! I was wondering if you filtered out any of the 'stuff'.

Rinsing and resetting my maple sap jugs this morning I noticed that the stinging nettles are starting to grow. Last spring I picked some for Eggs Florentine instead of using spinach.

Dried now. Waiting for it to cool down enough to put in the little grinder.
