Help wanted! New Turkey hunter taking out daughter.

Hello all. Im hoping to find material to read and watch for beginner turkey hunters. My daughter is 13 and requested to go out and hunt turkey's this spring. She got her first buck this last fall and missed a shot on a color faze black bear also....I think Iv succeeded in giving her the itchy trigger finger. Now she is looking to get out even earlier this year which is taking me outside of my wheel house. Iv got a box call and already have tasked her to start looking up videos on how to call. Iv been doing plenty of that also....I also got myself a feeding hen decoy... just not all that positive on set up, concealment, distance, how early to be set up, how to read sign...so much to learn and hard filter all the info. Looking for help to educate myself as quick as possible. I know there is lots on here. Iv been reading thru. Hopefully someone has seen something and can just drop a link, article, video...trying to trim off the fat so to speak. Mentorship seems to be something of the past. I guess Im hope for a online version of that. Thanks in advance for any help. Good luck this spring yall.

All I got to say is you don't have to be good if there's lots of turkey everywhere, but you do have to be good if there aren't

For example in my hayfield all I gotta do is setup a blind along a fenceline that turkey travel a long pretty much everyday, only have to sorta call just for fun.  I hand my daughter a box call, she makes some noise with it, and they go down the fences like always, its fun and she "called in a turkey"

I bought her two tags, her first will be a backyard bird, her second she'll have to earn on public land.

I would let other kids hint, but I got several other youths lined up already, same deal.  1st trurkey is a backyard bird, srcond will be earned on public.

My point is, a great area is better than having mad turkey calling skills.

But I don't have mad turkey skill, a few inflatable decoys, a box, a couple disks I scrape on with a stick and a disphram.

I go to the woods, I make noises, and they come.

Well you've come to the right place. I've combed through every page of the turkey subforum and read most of the threads here. There is decades of great experience and knowledge available. @RussMcDonald is doing online seminars for new hunters through the NWTF. They recorded the one they just did and it was great. WDFW has their turkey takeover, https://www.mywdfw.com/hunting-highlights-tt/ . Give that a read as well. Your best bet is to share a little about yourself and your daughter and see if someone is willing to put you on some turkey on their private property. Otherwise you should be taking her out right now and knocking on some doors in Eastern Washington and lining up some places before the season starts.

I also agree w/TheStovePipeKid that the WDFW turkey takeover pages are perfect for new hunters and don't forget about WDFW's First Turkey certificate:

Be sure to scout before opening day and have a plan for the youth opener weekend. Also, hunting on a farm/ranch is very different compared to hunting true mountain birds. You will see what I mean one day. Good luck! -253shotgunner

That Meat Eater episode was really good.  You got a short time frame because you can take your daughter out next weekend.  Youth turkey hunt is the 3rd and 4th.

If you follow up on the certificate we also (NWTF) have a first turkey pin but you have to get the certificate first.

I just got interested in turkey hunting last year, and I have found a channel on YouTube named Dale Outdoors that has more detailed turkey behavior info than any other source I have come across. A lot of folks tell you what to do, but he explains why in a way that really lit up the light bulb above my head! Although he's in the midwest, he does prefers a run and gun style. And he seems like about as stand up of a guy you could find.

Just like calling in elk, sometimes they come a running! And some days you can’t find a bird...  same principles appy, cover lots of ground, find birds, then setup..

Sounds like you’re already proficient at getting your kiddo opportunity, so stick to those hunting skills.

Specific to turkey , if you can get out now and locate areas that have birds you’d have a game plan opening morning. Once in the woods, cover ground , listen and look. If you can get a gobble, head that way and stalk into its area (under 100 yds) get setup and do some calling, lightly. Be patient he may loaf around for a while if silent and you can’t see him. Obviously if he gives his location up and has moved away, hit the boots again and repeat. If you can move right into gun range even better. Good luck! My 8 yr is on the gun this year and I am sick with excitement. We’ve killed lots of birds together but this year will be special!
