Daughter drew a youth muzzy cow tag. Fairly new to muzzy hunting shes currently shooting 60 grains and a 385 grain great plains conical. All shots will be under 100 yards any suggestions on different bullet or powder or will current set up be ok. Thanks

Which state are you hunting in? I assume Washington but not sure

Which rifle will she be shooting?

Which powder might she be shooting

Which ignition 209 or cap?

Believe me Rodney - I am not an expert at all just a long time shooter of ML's.

With the additional information that you provided I would say it will do the job just fine at the range you suggested.

Thanks for the reply.   Definitely going to be work if she puts one on the ground. She's only about 5ft and 100lbs so I'll be doin 99 percent.  Good luck to every one

My son killed a cow when he was 16 with a 70 grain charge of Swiss FFG BP and a home cast 450 grain lead bullet. Shot was right at 50 yards broadside. Dropped her in about 5 staggering steps. Full pass through. I'm not familiar with Pryodex but have heard mixed reviews, some love it some hate it? Do you have access to triple 7  FFFG?  quite a bit more energetic, may give just a little more insurance with the 60 grain load.  Just a cost saving suggestion here,  Have you ever shot patched round balls in the gun?  The 1-48 twist will shoot them with good accuracy. A lot cheaper than burning through the 385 grain conicals, recoil will be way softer as well.  Good luck with the hunt, I'm sure she will have a Blast!

No haven't tried patched RB out of it yet.  I've read mixed results on them so never gave them a shot. Might have to pick some up and try them out

If your daughter is comfortable with your mentioned load and bullet - I certainly would not go backwards to a PRB.

There are other lighter bullets she might use also.  Especially since you are in Washington which does not require a lead conical.

She's comfortable with that set up she shot a doe last year with it.   Always fig slow and heavy would be better then faster and lighter

Also picked up some 370 grain maxi balls to try out

The TC 1 in 48 twist will shoot those 370 grain maxi ball very well.  I have used them with good success using  80 to 90 grains of FFG.   I have also used pyrodex RS and they shot just as good but I just like backpowder better.   Good luck on your hunt.

Let me be more clear. I'm in no way suggesting going backwards on the round ball suggestion. I forgot to say  PRACTICING  with a prb would be more cost effective and less recoil. More shooting, less abuse= better shooting and confidence for young shooters...heck many adults could benefit from it.  Conicals aint cheap! And they do have a fair bit of felt recoil.  So put out the fires, no hot oil bathes needed here   Listen to Sabotloader, he wont steer you wrong.

HB is correct for just shooting and getting the feel of the rifle the PRB can be a less expensive way to shoot.  And really is not a bad thought other than the learning curve that goes with shooting a PRB

The 1-48 twist is the bigger concern when shooting something other than a full bore 50 cal. bullet.  You are really hampered in the length of the bullet you can stabilize.

R107 at one time I shot a lot of 1-48 twist Renegades - they really surprised me what they might do in a hunting situation.  A 50 cal. lead conical does allow you to be darn accurate and most of them have a very effective Terminal Performance especially in the range you have indicated with the powder load you have mentioned.

I would add and suggest to you that the 1/48 will shoot sabots and more modern projectiles not that they would provide a much greater Terminal Performance in the 100 yard range the the conical you are suggesting.
