Oregon Ochoco Elk
« on: June 28, 2021, 08:53:16 AM »
Just wondering if anyone has hunted this unit? I am 68 yrs old and drew it. This will be my last elk hunt in OR and am hoping to gather any info I can. Any info would be great. Forgot I also drew the Owyhee unit for deer. Again any help is appreciated.

One thing I would say for sure is to make sure you have some kind of mapping app like onx hunt because there are tons of big ranches, especially the farther west you go. I would focus more on the SE portion of the unit

I am no help with that unit. I put in for the deer tag you have and I would love to hear a write up on your experience after your hunt.

I hunted there 3-4 times for the controlled buck hunts. We always camped and hunted the north side of the Black Canyon Wilderness. From there we would drop down into Cottonwood Creek and the Ochoco Mtn. Trial. That takes you north and eventually onto private. I'm sharing this as I saw elk there often in those places and more than one nice bull. Found many heavy traveled elk trails on those north facing slopes. This was more than fifteen years ago but it would be worth scouting and exploring. Plenty of nice dry camping places as well.

I kinda miss that country. Always enjoyed going over there.
